If so, you could just apply for a multiple entry Tourist Visa when you apply in the USA. Maximum of 2 entries, at $30 an entry. Just put a "2" where it asks "Number of entries....." in section 1 and pay the correct amount.

But then be careful to check before what date you have to use the second entry!
When I did this the "date of issue" was June 28 and the "enter before" date was Dec 27. I have no idea why it was 6 months, since I believe Thai visas must be used within 3 months of issue. Perhaps getting 2 entries changed this to 6 months.
If it matters, I used the Los Angeles Consulate.

About 5 - 6 years ago, I was in the area and crossed to Myanmar there. Now, the funny thing is that we had to get our passports stamped on the Thai side some place that was not actually at the border.... say a town like 10 or 15 Km from the actual border. The Myanmar side stamped the passport at the border.
Anyway, answer is, well then it was, YES; do not know NOW.

The six months are indeed counted from the date of issue.
So if you enter Thailand a week after the issue date, you have six months minus a week....

This may have been due to the fact that there are still some (many ? ) areas along the Thai/Myanmar divide that remain disputed as to the exact border demarcation line and have yet to be resolved.

I have a friend, yes a friend, that has recently hit hard times in the commercial property biz and took me to lunch and inquired about him and his farang GF going to Thailand for 6 months to a year....and hopefully let this "down time" pass..
He said, between them, they had about 25K US to live on.....I told him he could live very well for 8 to 10 months on that..longer if they were frugal, but I dont think that is the case.....and he obviously doesnt have "mongering" in mind.....
My question for the bro's here is what is the visa situation at the moment for an american to stay for at least 6 months??
trip out every 30 to 90 days???
They plan on leaving in November....and secondly would like to rent a 1 bedroom apartment/service hotel in Ko Samui for at least 6 months...any recommendations in the 20 to 30K a month range??
I told him that his first mistake was taking his farang GF 
but they are serious and I just wanted to give him some accurate info....I told him to contact the Thai Consulate here, but apparently they have already bought the tickets....
I have not lived/worked in LOS since the Tsunami and dont know about current situations....
any info I could pass onto him is appreciated....

I know a few other friends who are thinking of doing the same thing -- just taking a break for 6 months to a year, albeit they are not in the position of having larger savings to tide them over, so they are looking into how to keep themselves afloat, as well.
Seems there's quite a few folks considering the flight from the USA. Fortunately, that is something which is an option in our times, though I'm not sure how wise it is.

First, get a double (more is better) tourist visa in the US:
First entry: 60 days
extension in BKK: 30 days
visa run
Second entry: 60 days
extension in BKK: 30 days
Subtotal: 180 days
Then:
3 visaruns for an exempt stamp: 3 x 30 = 90 days
Subtotal: 270 days
Make a trip to Vientiane and get another double entry.
( See above ) another 180 days
Total: 450 days = about 15 months...
If not tired of Thailand (or funds run out) repeat the 3 x 30 exempt visa runs....
And so on......

thats what I wanted to pass along to him..
he is still gonna think twice when he gets there with his farang GF...as he is a low 30's "metrosexual" type guy that I am sure some thai girls will eat up and his american GF is cool, but about a 7 (at best) in my book 
I think she has most of the 25K part LOL!
I am sure it will be an interesting "break" for them..
any info on nice studio's or 1 BR's in Samui is also appreciated....

When getting a Thai Visa in the USA the maximum number of entries is 2.
Dr Love's scenario would seem to work just fine.
The Farang GF has most of the 25K? I guess that's as good of a reason as any to bring her along, although I agree with atl about a Thai girl eating him up
And, mid-30s and only 25K or less? Better have a plan to make some serious money soon.
