yep you will need a visa for the lady, check out the british embassy in thailand web site, that has all the info you need, what documents you need and the fee. you also can email the embassy on there web site for help and when I did they was more than helpful.
just go to google, type in british embassy thailand and hey presto.

It is a bit busy at the moment. Phuket Air have a cheap package to London and the Embassy has been swamped.
63 days on average to process.
If your lady has been to London in the last few years there is now a Drop Box to speed applications for certain qualifying applicants.
If her paperwork skills are not very good and you are serious then you may consider employing a consultant or using a travel agenet which can assist her with the application. Doubly so if she has been refused in the past.

When applying for a visa, it does help for the TG to have substantial financial ties to Thailand to ensure that she will return to Thailand when the visa expires. It also may help for a TG to have lots of money to demonstrate that she is not a BG who will become a prostitute in your home country.
However, if you make the payment to her, don't expect to see the TG or the money ever again. Don't ever say that you were not warned.

Now now Mr. Alan, that is being very uncharitable about Dan's lady friend, however it does sort out those that are poor long term prospects. It is a fact that the lady will need to show financially that:
a. She has a regular income or one that matches her employment going back 6 months.
b. She has got enough to finance her proposed visit even if you say you are sponsoring her.
c. That this money was not dropped in that day but is a pattern of deposits and withdrawls or she can explain where it came from (sale of land, slaughtered the water buffallo or something)
It is desirable that she has a bank account. This is not as common as you may think. Thais who are paid in cash tend to spend most of it the same day, they do not consider that a financial history may be useful.
If you anticipate it being a regular thing then open an account in her name with an ATM card whilst you are in Thailand. Pay in money and take it out, pay in again later, take out again. Do this every week or two and soon she has a history of economic activity.
If you do not trust her enough to put some money in the bank then you also have to consider how you will pay for air tickets and visa fees at the embassy etc.
If her paperwork skills are not very good then get the travel agent to help. The smaller agents here can help with visas, general advice, banking etc. for a small fee which can smooth what can be a difficult and long winded trail.

thanx guys, defo trust her, shes not a bg, shes a student, her best mate is the manager of mcdonalds (my friends lady) and I asked her to come over she has never asked me for money. sounds like a pain in the ass all this paying weekly. can I not just deposit a grand in her account - thats like 70,000 bht surely thats enough??? and do I have to wait 6 months to bring her?

Ok, it all becomes a bit clearer.
As a bona fide student her employment history is not so important. However her visit would have to be in vacation time and she would need to show her course continuing after she came back. Hence her need to return.
You didn't say how old she is but if under 21 I would recommend a letter from her parents giving permission to go.
Funds can be more recently deposited because it is less likely to be a scam than someone claiming to be working but with no deposits except one massive one the day before the application. This would flash warning lights saying "Bar Girl" "Bar Girl" at the Visa Section who are a bunch of cynics and probably quite rightly.
As long as she is honest and can show ties which will drag her back to Thailand after a determined period and sufficient funds she should be OK.
If you can suggest it is a foreign language trip to help with her studies this would be helpful. It gives her a valid reason to want to go.
After the first trip it will become easier as she builds a history of not overstaying or getting into trouble.
The grand that you drop will go 60 on the visa application, 300 on tickets, 200 on clothes etc. Do not expect to see much left at the end of the trip.
