My sense is that it's probably not particularly worth having a car in Bangkok (please correct me if you think i'm wrong), but I'm interested nevertheless in how many Brothers own cars in Bangkok.

And, more importantly, why?

I was driving to work in Sydney this morning and the thought dawned on me that driving is probably the only thing I'd miss when I move up there.

First off if you live in the outskirts off BKK city, getting a taxi can be difficult.

Another thing it makes spontaneous trips possible. This Saturday I just had the idea to go to Pattaya at 3:00 PM on Sat. afternoon. After a quick pack, I was in Pattaya by 6:00 PM. While you could arrange trips with drivers it is a bit of a hassle.

Another reason, You can play your own music and not listen to Thai music or talk shows played in taxis.

The best deal would be for you to have your own car with a driver.

Last reason, it will impress the TG's

Well one thing is pretty obvious from the traffic - a lot of people think it is worth having a car!! I couldnt really conceive of not having one.

There are probably 2 reasons to justify a car...

(1) A lot depends where exactly you live. Remember when you are on holiday there a taxi is always available just out side the hotel lobby but when you are living here a taxi might be harder to find. I lived in one place where it was a good 5 minute walk to the road. If you are at the bottom of some soi getting a cab could take you 15 minutes or more.

(2) And then cars are useful for getting away... I am a golfer - taking taxis with your golf bag is a hassle even going to the golf course, getting a taxi back can be a real pain. I also love to get away at weekends - Pattaya, Hua Hin - and driving there is definitely more convenient.

Also bear in mind, while traffic is bad, parking is easy - valet/large car parks in shopping malls etc.. Oh and you can even hire a driver for a few thousand baht a month.

make it an SUV, you can fit 7 or 8 TGs in there...

and still have room for a keg of beer in the back.

If I were to work in BKK, I would leave my vehicle at home (Eastern Seaboard) and commute to and fro at the weekend.

You could have made it to Pattaya in 3 hours by BTS and bus as well. The BTS takes you to Ekamai where the Eastern routes bus station is. 2 hours to PTTY from there.

while in BKK, you can get just about anywhere you need to on BTS or MRT, and taxis for the rest...

but it also depends on your location in BKK. If you're out in the boonies like Laht Yao, you'll pay a lot for (and have trouble hailing) a taxi to get to work in Silom every day.

but TidyUp is right about being able to listen to your own tunes, makes the time while driving slip by a little faster.

I hope you can get a company car thru your new employer's package that they're offering you...

you can't finance a car here, being a foreigner, they only accept cash payments for foreign owners, and cars are not cheap here.

I know a guy who's lived here about 20 years, and he's never owned a car in LOS. Even here in Banchang he took tuk-tuks and Baht Buses everywhere, and does the same where he is in Songkla now.

and maybe Mister Alan, whose post follows mine, is a person who loves to label other people who make innocent statements about their musical preferences.

I don't like Thai music either, outside of a few, like Kara Bao, Mai Jarernpoora (old stuff), and some Loso...

I however listen to 107 FM or 105.5 which is all English tunes, 107 even plays some 70s stuff, and if that won't do, I just pop in an MP3 disc.

Right, like learning the language instead of having to carry hotel direction cards with you.

1. My wife, being a Thai, cannot even imagine to walk 100 meters so, car is a must everytime everywhere.
2. Me being grown up in Venice, I hate driving...long live the BTS, the MRT and the mototaxi....and by the way, driving in Bangkok makes difficult to spot and approach a cute TG walking along Sukhumvit!
