am looking at the possibly moving to Thailand from the states in June of 2005. I have put together at least what I think is a comfortable estimate of what it will take to survive for three months. I would like your opinion as how off base I might be.

$10,000 to cover
600 - flight
1800 - TESOL and CELTA at ECC
750 -3 months lodging
500 - food
1000 - new wardrobe ( I am a big man)
1000 - other (transportation, laundry, phone etc.

The rest for whatever (emergencies, entertainment etc)

Try to land a job making 35,000 to 40,000 Bhat a month (have bachlors and two years as a corporate trainer).
10,000 - rent
10,000 - entertainment
5,000 - food and dining
2,000 - transportation
3,000 - laundry, phone, clothes etc
Any remaining after 30,000 Bhat goes into savings.

Is this reasonable. Are there any holes that you can see. Appreciate you r input

Derman

So you plan to stay for 3 months with 0 expenses for entertainment? Yeah right, that will work

I think you need to bump up the sum for food quite a bit as well, unless you plan on eating at food stalls on the street 3x a day. Phone tends to cost quite a bit more (no cellphone card?), also transportation, going home late night from Nana etc...

Ah, sorry, was too lazy to do the math. Anyway, all your numbers are quite low, though not impossible. I'd be a lot more comfortable on 60.000 baht a month myself.

Cheers,

Greetings,

A couple of questions.

Do you plan to live in Bangkok, Pattaya, or upcountry?
The location will affect the price of many of your fixed costs.

Do you plan on eating farang food, it will cost a lot of $$. Thai food is cheap and good, but spicy.

Note: if you suffer from upset tummy, bring rolaids or tums with you. You can get powders here but not the tablets.
If you have time to shop around your clothes will not be too expensive, you could save some $$$ there. XL for men is reasonable for Export quality goods.

Otherwise try the Thai markets, also cheap.

Not sure about employment, it is not that easy.

Best of luck.

A

I plan to live in Bangkok at least the first year. I do enjoy the spicey Thai food. I plan on teaching English for a while and I have heard these jobs go begging. I do have the Bachlors degree and plan to take TESOL plus I have worked as a corporate trainer.

I found buying clothes in Thailand difficult. Am the complete opposite as only wear a size S which I thought would be a bonus in LOS but makes buying clothes difficult. The Thai clothes in my size seem to be skinny fit T shirts etc which I really don't go for.

In my humble opinion, it is better to have twice the amount of money that you think you really need and to divide by two your expectations related to your future revenues.

As a "farang" you will rapidly notice that near everything is usually more expensive than for the locals.

Thais are marvellous people (most of them), but some of them will try to cheat you. Also, don't underestimate the time factor... Thais and farangs don't have the same priorities in life. For a foreigner, "time is money", but you will have to deal with "tcha tcha!" (slowly!) and "djy yen!" (keep quiet!) all the time.

If you have a girlfriend here, you will have to deal with her family. Father, mother, brothers, sisters, grandparents, uncles, cousins... you will be permanently asked to "help": one is sick, the other one has just lost his job / had an accident / can't pay back a loan, etc... and you will give money also to your "in-laws" or your girlfriend / spouse (here, there is not a big difference) will reproach and get angry with you if you refuse because her family will always prevail against you.

One of the things that is great in this country it's that living here is not expensive... but twice (or more) than it should be, only because you are a farang!

Not a big deal anyway, but better to anticipate that!

Derman,

What you are trying to do is possible but extremely difficult.

I suggest you contact BIGDusa who seems to have a great time in LOS on a very limited budget.

Unfortunately, it will require much discipline and self-control that few if any of us have (other than BIGDusa )

I would hate to put off anyone from coming to LOS but to dream that you can arrive here with US$10,000 and then survive as a 'teacher' is fine - to actually do it, I suspect, will prove very difficult.

There are some comments in your original post that makes me think you havent thought it through that well.

Bt5,000/month for food and dining!!

Dining!! you can survive on Bt150 for food that is all (and you might not be a big guy for long!)

'Any remaining after 30,000 Bhat goes into savings.'.... just seems like cloud cuckooland to me.

Seriously, I dont mean to put you off... but to live here on very modest means requires a lot of self control and discipline in a land where self control and discipline dont come easy.

Abrak,

Probably right on the food part and possibly on the savings as well. I will have a $30,000 reserve in the states and another $110 (4400) coming in on a small pension. Might have to work overtime if I get in a pinch. The nice thing about this is I will owe $0 to creditors in the states so no obligations there. One or two shags a week will keep me satisfied for the long haul. I do appreciate the input from all.
