I am about to leave in 10 days back home. However during my stay I bought quite a lot of things! So I guess I will be overweight for getting in the plane. I have two questions about this:

1) I was thinking of shipping all my documents, books texts etc back home. I am not gonna need them soon so I don't mind when they reach my place. I went to a post office on the back of Siam Centre, the deal there for 15 kilos is around 2,100 Baht, and they will reach my place in Europe in 2 months. Is there any other place that makes better deals in terms of money or time? (especially interested in the first one).
2) For those of you who have flew with Thai Airways, how strict are they with the weight limit? Even after shipping the books I will have something like 40 kilos with me. I am on a long flight of course to Europe, but again I don't know their policy. Any tips/hints? Thank you in advance.

I didn't know where this issue should be in the forum, I guessed the "living here" section was more appropriate. My apologies if it's not the right place.

Mr Alan
Almost all airlines have scales where you place the checked bagage when you check in. So I would assume they are very strict unless you are talking about one kilo over weight. But even in that case, it probably depends more on the agent than the airline.

airlines charge overweight at 1 KG = 1%
of regular ticket fare. This may cost as much
as 30 EUR for 1 KG overweight.

20 KG are free plus about 8 KG handluggage
(size!).
22-25 KG will be accepted in most cases.
(If flying to U.S./Canada you have 2 pieces
32 KG each free luggage- piece concept).

I would take 24-25 KG regular luggage and
8 KG handluggage and mail all other stuff ahead
by sea mail at Post Office.

If you are frequent flyer and have silver or
gold card from airline, your free luggage may
be much more (some airlines allow 40 KG plus
2 pieces of handluggage 10 KG each for
gold members).

They are strict on hold baggage, but not on hand baggage, only its size. I have smuggled out whole sound systems before to europe. (put the excess as hand bagage as long as it is not too big -you will sweat though )

They will charge every kilo over for anything that goes in the hold, I had one suitcase over two yrs ago (forgot excact weight), they wanted 26,000 tbt to take it. I left it with family and picked it up the following trip.

I work in the transport and logistic, sector and per boat is the cheapest way to ship anything too big too go as hand baggage, any forwarding company can take care of it, just takes longer.+- 6wks to europe

I had the same problem (38 kgs - too much shopping in Panthip) the last time I came back in France. I arrived early at the airport and I found easily one passenger with a very small amount of luggages. I asked politely to register with her (yes, it was a young thai lady, "en route" to farangland!).

No problem... (but I am a lucky guy, certainly!)

hand luggage: this year I have seen frequent checks of hand luggage (size and weight) by airline at check-in and/or at gate!

if it is too big/heavy it had to be checked-in (and was charged).

I would not take the risk to pay the exorbitant fee neither would I bother other passengers (would you take any luggage from unknown persons??!! - these days it is a BIG NO NO).

play it safe and mail your excess luggage ahead.

thaier.

it also depends on your frequent flyer status and the class you fly.

it might help to call your local thai airways office ahead of departure.

inform them of your situation and that you might have some excess baggage due to relocation. usually works better ahead then at the stressed out check in the airport!!

Thanks guys...

unfortunately I am not a frequent flyer. Or to put it in another way, I am a frequent flyer with many airlines so this makes me a non-frequent flyer for each of them specifically! And I travel economy class.
I will probably ask an office in bkk about this....my problem is I am not coming back here, so I can't leave anything behind. I will try and ship as many as I can. It's a pity though that a friend of mine went back with Gulf Air (via Bahrein), he had 45 kilos and he didnt pay a single baht for that. Damn I wish I knew!

Anybody who could answer me the A? If you know of any post offices with different deal that is. I will check the site again in 2 days as I will be away in a few hours. Thank you!

40Kg that’s a lot, I have done in excess of 30 with Thai nothing said, but that was pre 9/11 now things are harder for the airlines with this years fuel price hikes as well.

Apart from extra allowances for Silver Gold, etc. frequent flier cards for some airlines allow extra for sports equipment i.e. Golf, Scuba, Ski’s, etc.

I you are going to ship the excess remember to ship items which are personal without any monetary value if you don’t want to get stung by customs, I had considered doing the same, my plan was to pack all my dirty washing up in brown paper, tied with string and post it to Mrs Basil Snr, from Basil Jnr…

Best of luck.
