I have done a full search but could find nothing that deals with my question.

Will be moving to Thailand next month for an extended stay (may even be for a few years if things go well).
I want my current employer to demob my personal effects to Bkk rather than UK. I thought this was a simple matter but a few spanners have been thrown into the works & need some advice.
Plan is to get a cheap <10K Bt apartment & use this to store all my belongings for at least a year. However, it seems I may be subject to import taxes. Can I bring my stuff into Thailand and store it in the above manner without incurring import taxes?
If not what options are available?
I could use a mate of mine who has a WP but this would mean he has to accept the goods..this is not easy to arrange.
Alternative to this is to use my TG's name & address but will customs be suspicious of a TG earning less than 10k per month importing 400kBt of expensive bikes & electrical equipment?
My plan is to stay in Thailand for 2 weeks in July then back to UK for 3 weeks. Get a 6 mth visa in London & return to Bkk mid August. Goods will arrive Thailand end of July. Any problems with this if I don't have a visa by this time? Would any of this be any different if I just kept it in storage in BKK with say FourWinds or similar co?
Long winded ramble but any people out there who can help?

You need a WP to get rid of the duties.... but that, not sure about this, only after being 6 months here.

You have my number, give me a ring. Previous owner of JVK holdings (movers) (he passed unfortunately away) is/was a good friend. His son who is running the company now should be able to help you/me with this problem. They have many companies in this sector and my best bet to help.

All other options will involve bribing customs and not being sure beforehand if it works. It worked for me on a tourist visa many years ago, but the initial billing from customs was extremely high....

Cheers!

Triyclops - got the PM thanks!
Manuel..I'll do better than that. I'll pop in & see you when I am next in town (end of June)..my back is as stiff as ***k at the moment. Perhaps one of your staff can administer those essential oils to much needed neglected parts!
Seriously, this has got potential to get long-winded and expensive.
One option might be to use the name of my mate's wife and pretend it is his stuff that he is shipping back (he works here with me). It may be easier if a Thai's name is on the consignment notice & they can deal with customs.

This subject has been hashed before, but the discussions are spread over several topics... none of them searchable. I work in the industry and I can tell you without question that your gear will be dutiable unless you have a work permit AND you import your personal effects within 6 months of that work permit's issue date.

It won't work to use a Thai as the importer of record... they are also subject to duty. Under-declaring the value of your goods won't likely help much either... Customs assigns their own values, based on a database of market values that they maintain. And don't count on the time-honored mechanism of undertable encouragement to reduce costs... while this was workable in the past (given the right contacts) it has become more difficult in the current "clean Customs" environment.

I advise against relying on a "friend of a friend" to perform miracles at Customs for you... stick with one of the local experts... JVK is one of several... and then either get a work permit or resign yourself to paying some duty. If you are not able to obtain a work permit then you should take a close look at what you bring in... electronics in particular will boost your duty cost and it may be more practical to buy new gear here in Thailand.

So he pays duty bringing it in, but from what he seems to imply, he may be taking it to the UK again as well - won't he be able to get the duty back once the goods leave Thailand again?
