Alright, I have been away from thailand for a few months and am suffering from post partem blues I guess but.... I am really considering doing something a little nuts and just closing out my life in the west and migrating to thailand. Everyday that I go through the mundane motions of my daily existence is another lost day that is just ffffing pissing me off!!! After going there I don't even feel like there is anything I can do here to really compare. I guess I am looking to see if anyone can commiserate or provide any ideas. Sorry to rant.

I have done this, but I had a job waiting for me here in Thailand. I sold everything I owned, except for some things I have in storage (small collectable things). I came here with everything I owned in 5 suit cases. Including 2 bowling balls It tends to set a guys mind at ease when the thought of starting off fresh and new sets into your mind. Then reality hits! The money runs out. The VISA thing, the traffic, the people that like to rip off foreigners, it all is things you need to think about. If you have no job, what will you do when the money runs out? You would more than likely be able to teach at best, unless you have some IT skills or special skills that would apply to the foreign companies here. It's not easy to get a job here by no means! My personal opinion is this. If you have enough to retire on in your country, then yes you could live in Thailand quite well. If you do not, then you are more than likely going to have to chnage your standard of living. I say stay home and save your money, and make the move when the timing is right financially. Thailand is not going anywhere, another 10 years of saving money wont kill you. Only my personal opinions.

Good call Chang Killer. Whisper is a good example, he has chucked his lot in and has realised you need a job, which has been given once he finishes his TEFOL deal. You need to have a lot of things in place in Thailand, job linded up, accom booked, visa set up. Do some home work before you chuck it in. Dont worry I`ve looked at it, for me the Firearm industry in Thailand is about shot, thats what I do for my work. Think clearly on this and save your money as Krypto has said and set yourself up that way, I dont know your age but I`m teeing up to be in Thailand in about 8 years full time, I`m 42. I`m setting my work up so that I can run it from Thailand, office on Silom ect. Cheers S05..

Good advice Kryp; My situation is similar: 10 years ago, had a job waiting, came over with a few suitcases and very little cash and a pregnant Thai wife. First few years are hard and I could not have done it without the support of my wife. In the mean time self employed, yes I made it with a lot of luck and endurance. Turk, everybody goes through frustrating fases, but to pack your suitcase and make a move to Thailand is a BIG adventure with plenty of risks. Alternatively you could come over for a year and see how you get along, but in this case leave your options at home open. Good luck.

I don't know your situation. But if you can't make it at home, chances are your not going to make it in Thailand. If your running away from from problems? Moving to Thailand is not going to resolve the problem. In most cases the problems are self imposed and the way to resolve the issues is through a thorough self examination (soul search). Enough of the aaaahhhhhmmmm Stuff.

CalEden is correct. Running away from things isn't going to solve anything. Visiting Thailand for fun vs living there isn't going to give you the same feeling in the long run. Things will start to wear you out.

turk182 For what its worth my general advice to you or anyone thinking of making a life changing move is, GO FOR IT! I can’t tell you if Thailand is the place for you, I don’t get there myself for another 12 days. It will be a lot easier to do if you’re still single and don’t have any kids; you only have yourself to worry about. Whets the worse case scenario? If it doesn’t work out you can go back and start again. Before I am accused of being reckless, I have made this type of move, not to anywhere as difficult as Thailand, but it was a huge move, and yes I did make the move with my family. You only get one go at this life, don’t waste it. REGARDS UKGUY
