From Stickman Oct. 5/2003 'Soi Cowboy was hit by Immigration Department officials Friday before last and this really demonstrates how the Immigration Department is getting serious in targeting the farang crowd. It would seem that their expectation was that all visitors should be carrying passports, although photocopies were accepted. And it is not just Soi Cowboy. Thai Immigration are patrolling all around the city, and making random checks on non-Thai citizens, requesting to see their passport and check that the visa is all in order. Just as Thai citizens are required to carry their ID card with them at all times, technically us foreigners are supposed to carry our passports at all times too. While it has always been the law, in the past it has generally not been necessary and a copy of the passport or some other form of ID has sufficed. It is a pain having to carry one's passport with them all the time and no doubt it will start to become worn and tatty. However, this is not a time to test the immigration officersí patience and I for one am taking my passport with me everywhere, despite the fact that it is a major hassle. If you donít have your passport on you and are stopped at random by an immigration official, you might well set off a chain of events that ends up with you in the IDC even though you are in the country legally. Yeah, things have got that bad. '

I would think carrying passport documnets (or facsimiles) would be second nature to any traveller in a foreign country - this merely illustrates that point. Interesting, but not news. Harry

I have been to Bangkok three times this year for pleasure(but that's another thread). I have never carried a passport. I do however thank you for your report FM, and will now begin carring a copy. My question is....Do I need to copy the page that stamped when I arrived too?

Mr. Teacher.......a 'copy' is not really proof that you have the actual documents required to be legally present within any country, including Thailand. An official who requests your passport is actually asking for the real passport as issued by your government and used by you to enter the country. While some people feel this is old information, actually APEC will bring all the rules to bear. Asian countries gain big 'face' when they hold APEC and Thailand will be no different. The problem comes with what the official wants, at the time he asks you. By this I mean that , he will interpret the rules and apply them as he sees fit at that time. That means the more documents that you can provide to him that are original, the quicker he will be able to feel that he has done his job. Mr. Hzink....I think most travelers do not carry their actual passports with them, perhaps because in Thailand they might lose them while engaged in some 'activity'. From my experience while being in Shanghai during the APEC meetings a couple of years ago, security is super high. Copies do not always make it. Also a lot of the process is attitude. If you give agro you get agro. If you smile and use yes sir/no sir formality you will serve yourself well and be on your way faster. One more detail...just because your countries passport if familiar to you, does not mean that the official looking at yours has seen a 'real, live one' before. I would suspect that most North Americans have never seen a German, or French or even a British or Irish passport before, up close, in hand. Could you tell a fake if you saw one? Well probably neither could the official asking for yours. So he will look at it pretty hard if he has never seen one before. A photocopy will even look more 'foreign' to him. Just some ideas, Mr Eyeswideopen, nothing to get hyper about.

Copy your details page, your current visa / entry stamp and your landing card so they can see the immigration number. My current visa etc covers about 3 pages, extensions of extensions and about 7, pending police investigation stamps.... I also carry a copy of my work permit etc, but never carry originals of anything. I've never been asked for my passport by a policeman, but it can happen. I also carry my 30B Health Scheme Card to add to my legitimacy.

I've met this string of immigration officers last week on Soi Cowboy and Asoke Plaza. Not one time have I noticed them to interview or approach foreign visitors. All what they were doing was chatting up bargirls ... Yurune, you might like to carry a 'Thai Rak Thai' sticker with you at all times But like Yurune I have never been approached by a police man in the 22 years I've visited and stayed in Thailand.
