I would love to relocate to Bkk if I get a good offer. How should I go about it? where to search for good offers with (preferably) multi-national companies? Knowing that i'm with an IT background (Currently an IT manager in a GSM provider), how is the IT jobs market in Thailand ?

no doubt many guys with the same wish - by and large you have to be in the know to get a job with a Thai firm, or else work for a multi-national group and get transferred to bkk - also wages are by and large based on the local rates, so be prepared for a drop in income - but against that living is much cheaper. You could try sending a C/v to companies that are in your line of work, sites like siamguru etc list most major local companies, but kep it simple as often the thai staff who read emails are not as fluent in english as they would have you believe !

TPI hit the nail on the head with the above. Most jobs are filled by local referral. If your not successful with your newspaper search, I would consider teaching English in BKK and start networking. Make the break and DO IT.

Local Yokel knows his way around the Thai business world. Good source of info.

I would assume the longer you are out of your profession and into jobs like teaching, the less it is likely someone wants you for your IT skills (pretty low half-time, right).
There are many English teachers around that did not expect to end up that way.

Further you have to consider some more aspects when calculating your desired / needed future salary...
- you don't have family and friends being able to pull strings (or willing to support you)
- you have to cover not only your living expenses but also your pension funds, healthcare and savings for the emergency / unforeseen events... I bet a lot of people over there will have a damn' nasty wakeup when it comes to pension funds - you are not always 25!
- in your country you are eligible to any professional intermediation / agency or support service (or social welfare) because its available and because you are a national citizen, in Thailand instead you have to make visa runs.
No money, no honey.

In my field of IT the rates paid here are 25 - 30% lower than in the US or EU. The reason is that there are enough Indians who are willing to work at rock-bottom rates (to gain experience) to fill the shortages of local professionals.

Best bet, pull down a couple of projects in the US/EU each year and spend your 'bench' time in SEA, that is what I do.

Two more weeks and I am finished in Detroit and heading home...

From what has already been said, local job = local wages or multi-nation = western wages, is true. If you don't manage a transfer, the above quote will hit you hard.

I was looking into a job in BKK and was struggling to negotiate more then a 1/4 of what I earn here. While the job was specifically for a farang, the bosses (farang) thought it quite OK to limit their salary offer to a ridiculous amount that wouldn’t seriously attract anybody of value. Given how this company praises itself on having the "best" employees, so to speak, I guess it is more a case of the "best" for what they pay.

Your salary will be dependent on how many local's can do your job. The more that can, obviously the less you will earn.

Of course, while a suitable salary to live in BKK will get you by, you will be struggling to gain wealth for you later years. In which case, its a short-term "paid holiday" to get it out of your system. Then again, you never know what the future will bring....

At the end of the day, this was my criteria for working in LOS - Being paid enough money to live modestly with spare funds to get out and about on the w/e instead of sitting in a unit wishing I had money to go out....Using said criteria, I decided to pass on the job and continue to holiday in LOS while keeping my highly flexible job at home.

What’s worse then being broke in your home country.....being broke in another country.

Edit: Of course, all of the above is IMHO...

Hey China's got it right.
The IT business is tough cos many 3rd world countries have hard wroking IT guys who can do OK.
"Our" advantage is the knowledge of the english language and the culture of doing business with farangs and maybe even being adaptable.
Seminars, conferences, shows. These are places where you can make contacts that could help you get an overseas posting with a company. Thats the way to keep your salary up. Coming to Thailand a nd then looking for a job is not. Most of the time you just gotta know people. Getting a position in Asia gives you more scope than just wanting BKK.
Plus, you gotta do the job prperly and not just use it as an excuse to be in Suk chasing pussy!!

Probably best bet is to find something you can export [other than TGs !] - this is the ideal scenario, as it can often be worked out to spend a month in LOS getting the product, and then a month back in the real world moving it... this is the ideal in my book, as then you dont tired of the place, and are always looking forward to the return... and know it isnt far away -
Of course the hard part is to find a product and a buyer at the other end ! -
In this respect, a few days wandering around Chatujack MAY give you some ideas, amazing what things work, and what dont ! Know of a few Guys who did very well exporting reptiles and such, and another guy had a friend who was a high class interior decorator, - they brought the real large 'Benjarong' porcelain vases for about $200 US and sold for $2000 !
- suffice to say, many ventures aren't as successful -
