Returned last night from a visa run to Savannakhet, Laos (got a 60 day tourist visa).
I went with the Jack's Total Golf company on Suk Soi 12 (www.jackgolf.com/en/) and I highly recommend using them to get your visa. They're quite professional and they take care of everything - transportation, hotel, food and, of course, the visa stuff. You're just along for the ride.
8 hour bus ride from Bangkok but it was a very spacious bus with tonnes of leg room so it was easy to sleep.
Savannakhet itself is the 2nd biggest city in Laos but that isn't saying much. It's basically a ghost town and the masses of people that you see in Bangkok, for example, simply don't exist in Savannakhet.
Myself and a couple of the other visa runners took the day we had there to explore the town. It was bloody hot and the sun blazed overhead. We were obliged to stop in many a restaurant to restore our fluids with the only beer you can get in Laos - Beer Laos. It's quite good actually and, at 30 - 40 baht for a big bottle, we drank plenty.
If you can find it, drop by Moonlight Cafe. It's the only farang run business in the whole town (according to Allen, the owner of the Moonlight Cafe). Nice guy. I enjoyed his story of how he ended up in Laos.... had a crazy wife back in Thailand so he flight to Laos in fear of his life 4 years ago and settled there. Have a bacon burger and a beer Laos while you are there.

No rtb, no SOL in Savannakhet. Maybe in 10 or 20 years...
Seajohn is right. The price was 6600 baht (or 7000 if you wanted a room to yourself... otherwise you have to bunk with a complete stranger). I chose to sleep alone.
As for girls, I think that it is developing. Things are happening in that town every since the Friendship Bridge to Mukdahan opened (in Jan 2007) and I think that the "trade" will be steadily increasing as time goes on.
For example, while we were waiting outside the consulate, there was this Lao guy there telling us guys about how nice his restaurant was... "good beer", he said. "Beautiful girls too", he added. Not too subtle. Obviously a dealer in flesh. However, none of us got the location or name of this restaurant so that was that.
Additionally, there's a disco in town too and Allen from the Moonlight Cafe said that ladies hang out there after 9 pm. However, given as myself and the guys were banging back the Beer Laos since 1 in the afternoon, none of us were steady enough on our feet to go to this disco and check it out. Allen was nice enough to find a tuk-tuk for us and sent us back to our hotel where we individually crashed until morning.
So, to sum up, yes, there is flesh to had in Savannakhet if you do some exploring and find it. Too much beer did me in so I can't tell you readers anything more. To be honest, I didn't go there with the intention of looking for chicks anyway.

Last week I went to Savannakhet with the intention of making a visa and of rendezvousing with an old friend (let's call him Marquis, as I had in another thread years back) who was traveling down from Vientianne at the same time. I also happened to be bringing along my Dad, who is in Thailand these few months visiting me, and wanted to have an adventure or just to keep me company.
We went with JackGolf. Price as above in the thread. Big nice VIP bus for the long ride. Met a nice English fellow on the way, named Earl. We chatted about chemistry and the beginnings of life. I was able to snooze a few hours on this night trip, too, only awakened once by an obese homosexual in the row behind who began to whine late in the night that he'd lost his earring. Yes, our voyage had it's share of characters.
Besides the voyage and the border guards and changeovers of vehicles to cross the new and mighty bridge from Mukdahan, it is a bit tiring to have breakfast, then be shuttled to the Thai Consulate. All after the journey without respite or check in.
That Thai Consulate is a one room affair, with a line paralyzed and stretching out the door and down the Alamo stairs in the full blaze of the sun. I happened to be squeezed between the aforementioned light-loafers fatboy and a cretin from Sweden (must have been shipped in during the viking days) ahead of me. There was also a woman ahead of him who was Thai and about 40 with taut brown skin who reminded me of nothing more than the kind of hardened woman one only sees hanging around bars in certain coastal cities. Her English was very good, of course, and the cretin hit it off with her; I should say he was attracted to her as birds of a feather.
My attention was distracted from this curious interchange by a small group of cute Lao girls who joined the line at the bottom of the stairs and a few who were not shy in meeting my eyes. Alas, as the line ponderously inched upward, my attention was drawn again to another freak who squeezed in at the head from another angle. He had long bobbed blond hair and tremendous blue tint insectoid sunglasses and white cowboy clothes. He was Russian, and was producing a stir because he had crowded in and had refused to paste the required photos on his application. One sees these guys and immediately Lysol is thought of.
Finally we were taken to our rather 3/4 star hotel, courtesy of JackGolf. Paper pealing off and all the rest. However the outside was pretty with a fountain. Puenpaseud is the name, I think. I shared a room with my Dad, no problem. Though I grimace to think of some other people that would share this room with a stranger met on the bus. Anyway this later proved a problem in many ways. First, the ad for JackGolf says Class A hotel HoongThip Hotel, a real nice place downtown. That's where I told Marquis to wait for us. He got a room there and couldn't find us, and of course our phones had great difficulty working (AIS) over there. The next problem was though we thought we'd dine at Lao Lao Der restaurant (our second mtg point) it got changed at the last minute to the restaurant in this hotel, due to rain. Nonetheless, the Marquis made it and he, I, Dad, and the Earl all shared some beer Laos together and eyed the little waitress lecherously. After a while she liked it.
Then my Dad thought he'd turn in, so the three of us headed out at about 9pm. Got a motor sahmlor down to the River than walked back up looking around. Went to the nightclub attached to Hoong Thip Hotel. It was all Lao style, kinda like Isan you know, but slower dancing by audience. The ladies that were sat with us were the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen. If only I had been cloned, I could have f***ed every one of them. Well, after hours of drinking dancing and joking (only I of us seemed to be able to communicate well with the smatterings of my dialects etc) the place was closing. The girls had drank their share but still weren't too keen on going out with my friends for whatever reason. It's up to them, discreet (bring your own rubbers), and after closing maybe yes or no, like lots of these places (their real job as hostesses is getting us to drink!). Mine did however... We took a room in Hoong Thip at midnight... And my God what a beautiful and sweet and genuinely sweet and lovable girl she was! I can claim that in all my years of humping girls I've recently met, I have never made such sweet love to a woman just met like that. Regardless of those veterans who may scoff or even those kind fellows, not wishing me to feel this new pain of separation from her, would like me to amend such a claim, I cannot. The exoticness and purity that touched me deeply like my first night in Thailand, how it used to be, surrounding her character, body and smiles... and mine. Let us see how long this dream lasts between my telephone, her photo, all the miles between us, and the opening petals of time.
The voyage back was dull and long. Still, it's good to be home... with my duties... my joys...
