Waiting to get a International Drivers License before purchasing a car, but have a few questions. Can a Farang do monthly car payments, what is the normally required down payment and loan percentage rate??

I would say 'no,' unless you have a Thai guarantor... Buying anything on monthly installments is a problem for foreigners.... not surprisingly.

'What if you pay cash for the car at the dealer for a new car?? Asking it car can be in your name or does it have to be a Thai National?? Don't have a Internation Drivers License, anyone have info on getting one in Laos (planning a Laos visa run this month).

Farang: "Hi, I'm farang, and I would like to ask for a loan for 100,000 Baht. Oh, by the way, I have 3 million Baht in my bank account, a job that pays 400,000 every month, and lots of money to my name" Bank: "Sorry, mai dai, ka Thai: "I want 3 million Baht. Have no money. Have no job. Please give me money" Bank: "Very good, sign here, ka" I always found that fascinating -- albeit I understand that most Thais put their house up for collateral, and at least (usually) can be found by Thai banks - while it is assumed that Farang are a 'flight risk'. Still, it's mostly amusing. If you want a bank loan, send a Thai to ask for it

So True!! Have to wonder how many family homes are confiscated by banks for defaulted loans. Thinking Í'll have to pay cash upfront to possibly get the car in my name. Option 2 would be for the TGF (not preferred) to pay for it under her name.

Some dealers will carry the note on the car for you. It will likely call for at least 30% down and pay off in 12 months. Forget the banks. Pay cash and the car can be put in your name. You will need a letter of residence from Immigration and your international driver's license. My car is in my name and I plan to buy another when I get back late this month.

when I bought a truck for my favorite girls family, I went to the dealer. the family had nothing, no collateral. I put down the down payment and send money monthly to pay the payment... I never understood how a businessman would giv eup the truck to a family that is dirt poor with nothing... considering I could walk away at any time... the trucks not in my name... nor do I car.. a small amount in life to pay.... what happens when a bunch of farangs stop making payments?

Ok, purchased a 2009 Honda Jazz (in TGF's name with father also signing the contract). Made the initial down payment and only have to pay 10K baht a month for the next 6 years. On the previous post, if I stop making the payments....I believe the bank will take the family land as well as the car. I'd invest in a Thai Banks, don't think they have a mortgage investment problem....... they must be getting a fair share of land on the cheap which they can sell to developers for a profit later.
