Hi Bros,

I work for a large company in the US and need to hire a couple of stellar systems administrator/Network engineer people. I'm thinking about doing this in Bangkok. The reason for this is because they would work remotely for what would be a night shift job in the US. With the reversed time in Thailand I thought I might be able to hire higher quality more senior folks. Even though I work for a flagship company (in Tech) it's very very hard to find the level of quality I need that is willing to work the shitty (based upon California time) hours of the jobs I have open.

I know from my extensive travels that there are a lot of expats that are well suited for the roles. It is jsut a question of validating that this is correct, so that's why I am posting to try to get a sense of things.

Oh and if I get approval on hiring I'll be paying a very good US wage to someone offshore. Anyway just testing the waters here. Please let me know.

Thanks!

Given the economic situation in silicon valley, I don't understand why you should have difficulty finding qualified candidates willing to work the graveyard shift.

No offense but.... if your salary is competitive and your having a hard time sourcing locally then your company must not be good at recruitment.

There are lots of talented people on the market. I have been sourcing people for the past 9 months for gigs on the East Coast and very impressed with the quality and price. I did a sourcing review for a large int'l company that wanted to offshore some of the ops here. Once we ran the numbers and did a hard look at the local infrastructure, it was deemed unworkable. We moved part of the OPS to KL and the rest stayed in the US.

I work mostly online for a couple US clients and IMHO Thailand is not well suited for this esp if you're running a high availability service or infrastructure. I have 2 DSL lines (separate companies) for fail over but the through-put is dismal quite often and really impacts my ability to do the work.

Not to take anything away from the bros here, if I were the COO/CTO, I would not be heading down such a path unless I was looking to cut my costs by 50% to recruit here and I was okay with < 5 9s

I hear you Visitingbkk,

I think my recruiters are dropping the ball. But I've sourced this sort of position for over 10 years internally and through contract. It's always tough to fill with senior people. The reason I was told to consder a move was because it is sooo hard to source the right people for the grave positions. It is really easy to get lame red light green light guys. I think my recruiters don't get it. In my last company I only had real trouble if these folks were contractors, if they were regular employees I could get good people with effort. It is actually much harder int he Bay Area right now to hire popel than before. The reason is that the really good people won't move because they are scared and with all the layoffs I get a lot of really unqualified people applying.

I don't need much in the way of infrastructure just good power, and connectivity. Those 2 considerations mean India (thankfully) is out of consideration.

If I don't move on this fast though they will try to staff it out of India and that will be a disaster as it has always been in the past wherever I've worked. The Indian market hates ops work and is sooo unrealiable it is mind boggling. So that's the trouble I have.

You will likely get far better results in KL or Manila....it is possible to find top quality net admins, good English skills, more reliable infrastructure and..... (again not trying to take away from the readers here) local salary rather than expat.

With that said, if you are hell-bent on expat recruitment, drop me a PM and let's chat

I may need to hire a (junior) local/Thai system admin.

He will be sent out to install Demo server in the work environment.

Your suggestions are appreciated.
