I'll be back in LOS in about 5 weeks time and was thinking of checking the Bangkok Post for jobs. Is this worthwhile or a futile exercise being a farang ? Has anybody ever landed a job in this way and what tips would people give regarding job hunting ?

StueyB, Sad to say, there aren't really an awful lot of jobs in LOS particularly for Thailand-lovers. The last time I was checking out of my hotel in Bangkok (sigh!) the clerk said "hope to see you soon again" and I said, listen I hate going back, if there is a job in this hotel, please let me know. And she suddenly turned serious and began moaning about lack of any job ops even for Thais, let alone farangs. "You can sit in the kitchen and clean the dishes" was all she could manage by way of a light-hearted response. Many farangs have set up business there -- bars, restaurants, pubs, whatever --- more of the same. I guess if you're bringing in a big investment which would provide employment to locals, you'd be welcome, but if you are thinking of getting employed yourself... you won't be welcome -- unless again you have some special skills which the country is seeking. That's my humble opinion

Yeah, I know the story, its very depressing. I'm not sure my balls are big enough to sell up here and move over to LOS and start a business. I've been a telecom consultant in Germany for past 4 years but am now taking a long holiday due to not getting another contract due to the collapse of the industry. Things might pick up in a year or so with 3G but I'd prefer to work in SE Asia if possible. Times are tough everywhere right now, still my flights are booked and I'm now on holiday until at least next August. Time to take it easy and get my pole greased in LOS ;-p

Guys, many of you have IT experience but the international IT market has length and breadth as well as height as I think many of you would agree. But Thailand seems to only have one of the three dimensions covered whereas the length or height isn't even on the horizon. If you want to look for an opening, look in one of those tow dimensions. 3G? Shit techonology that will barely survive within Nokia itself! Oops, add into that various Euro Telecoms that are trying to push a content access and control system that content owners are NOT willing to buy into and you have a lot of wasted hardware with no more content available to the end user than would have been available without 3G existing in the first place. We've got 4 or 5 different mobile service providers here in Japan that distribiute ring tones as well as still image and even including video without the "benifits" of 3G! 3G? Sure, the third generation on its way to extinction! Boy, does that sound like a good idea or what? Spend millions of dollars to implement something that doesn't allow content owners or service providers to garner any more market of busniess share than they had before? Hmmm, I can spend more money doing the same thing I did before but not gain any more profits or market share from it? Sounds like a good idea to me!!! Duh! ;)

Stueyb - If you want a job in LOS, locate a company in your own country that has connections or a remote office in Thailand and get a job with them and work your way to where you wan to be. If you want an express train to paradise, ain't no such thing.
