Hey guys, I was wondering if it is really safe in Thailand and especially bangkok. My dad wrote this to me I have some reservations about your contemplated trip to Thailand. I > spoke with a Dutch collegue who travels a lot and has been to Thailand > several times. He cautioned that young men travelling alone or in small > groups are very susceptible to being targeted for planting drugs and > other scams. He said their justice system is totally authoritarian and > corrupt. If someone gets caught doing anything illegal, especially > having possession of drugs, they are gone - literally - for years. > > So, my advice is that if you are doing this, go with an organized group, > not just 1-2 guys and don't mess around. I could tell you stories about > Bankok too - but that is equally risky for young men. Unless you go with > an organized group, I'd suggest looking for another destination. > any comments?

Father knows best, right? If you are scared of the media corruption from the Dutch, then you won't stand a chance. Ha ha ha! Ditto with the illegal US media monopoly and other places. What I recommend you do is watch the movie "Man With the Golden Gun". Then start reading, do lots of research and when you can swallow and make it to BKK, get ready for a bundle of men approaching you saying, "Mr....TAXI?? Taxi, Mr.? Limo?? Mr.?? Are you working tonight?? NEED A LADY?? He ha ha hae he!". Yep. Get ready for a ride, if you make it. Or listen to your Father. Go to Amsterdam. Gyaos

I've been to Thailand, six times in the last two years. BKK, Chaing Mai, Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. I have never once been hassled where I felt I was in danger from the locals. One thing I don't do is fool around with drugs nor am I looking for it! I've been out on the strret late at night comming back from bars with no trouble, then again I don't get drunk when I'm out. I wait until I'm back at the hotel. Use common sense and your head and you will have a great time Thailand.

Security concerns and risks are the same everywhere across the globe. I have travelled all over the world for the past many years now and I find the same hassles everywhere. Sometimes its a rude taxi driver, a cross Customs official or a bad-tempered policeman. As has been said, just keep a cool head and be careful. That is all. If you come across as a scared tourist, or an ambivalent type, you are more likely to get targetted. The risk is the same everywhere. A sucker is a sucker is a sucker.

I've gotta agree with all the above, but like to add a few. Do not lose your temper with the Thais. Do as they do, smile a lot and talk no matter how pissed you are. Don't put them in a position where the only way to save face is to break yours. This sounds like common sense, but based on what I've seen needs repeating. Treat them with respect from the start. Taxi drivers, BGs, the hotel staff treat them welll and the'll look out for you too. Find a home bar within "crawling" distace to your place and make friends. Finally, leave the "I own the place" mentality at home, that's the fastest way to piss people off.

travelled to BKK, Pattaya and Chaing Mai twice....used trains buses and taxis and tuk tuks....no problems. Went to street fair in Chaing Mai with about 20,000 Thais and they were all nice. Safety was never an issue for me in thailand. Other countries like Mexico, Jamaica, etc you couldn't pay me to hang out in.

I recently went to Bangkok for some fun all on my own. I found Bangkok and the people of Thailand to be very appreciative that I came to their country and had an interest in the people their (NEP girl.......hehehe) Well is it safe? I would say it's safe as long as you don't do anything stupid. I do have some 3rd world experience spending 2 years of my life living in Jamaica, a 3rdWorld Island in the Caribbean. If I were to compare Jamaica to Bangkok I would say Jamaica is much more dangerous. When I arrived in Bangkok it was early in the morning so I took my prearranged limo to my hotel the Marriott. I called the hotel ahead and per booked the limo even if it cost $30 US I'm sure glad I did because it was 3:00am and it's a long distance from the airport to the hotel. I know I would be freaking out at this point if I just jumped in any cab in front of the airport. I was being cautious and smart; My safety plan being in a new unfamiliar country was to get to the Hotel safe at any cost. One word of advice is to "Always be in control of the situation" and don't go anywhere with anyone you don't know no matter what it's about. It's all about common cents. Trike and taxi drivers will all try to get you off the street to take you to there buddies massage place so they get a commission. Don't go! You will end up paying a lot more then you should. On the first morning when I awoke I went down onto the street and headed over to Nana Plaza. I got psyched up first before I went out on the street getting prepared for the street hustlers that I thought would be following me asking for money or to buy something but there were non!!!! Not like in Jamaica! They expect some money or they get mad and cuss you. This was not the case in Bangkok......I walked over to Nana Plaza and not a single person bothered or said anything to me. I was very plesently surprised and even felt bad that I thought I would be hustled on the street when there was non at all. I then felt very safe after getting a good feel for the place. Compared to Kingston Jamaica, Bangkok was a heaven on Earth. I ended up having a great time, got laid 5 times in 4 days, and plan on coming back again in November with 2 friends and will stay a little longer.....maybe 10 days. Also some day would like to live there too. Zap! (Edited by Zap at 4:44 pm on May 28, 2002)

Travelingman2: Thailand is no less safe then any other country. There are always bad places to go to and being at the wrong place at the wrong time, but that could happen anywheres. I will say that being in a foreign evironment will always not feel as safe as one that you know. Just keep your wit's about you and you will be fine. I think the most dangerous thing you have to worry about is crossing the street. Those thai drivers will not slow down for pedestrians, so RUN!!! ha ha ha!!

>>Thailand is no less safe then any other country.<< Bullsh*t, I wouldn't spend my night outs in Chechnya or Afghanistan! Thailand is safer than many places in Germany! So, if you have partied in the former East-Germany (present day), then Thailand will feel like a heavily guarded pre-school EDIT: Wow, I love how the "feces of bull" got an automatic asterisk!
