Gents help please where to retire in Thailand?

Hi Gents,

I am hoping to use your knowledge, experience, and contribution to answer the following questions...

I am looking to base myself Thailand for retirement in a few years.

Over the years I have visited the LOS many times but still looking for that ‘right spot’, I am very familiar with the usual coastal spots Pattaya,Hua hin,Samui,ko Chang and Ko Tao.

As you can see I am trying to source a place in LOS that has some specific criteria:

· A location near a beautiful beach (for example I do not think the beaches in pattaya are beautiful) any ideas ?!!

· Preferably close to an airport,( or rail station etc) by close a maximum of 1 hr journey to get to an airport

· A place that has big enough infrastructure to have a good hospital, banking facilities, shopping centers etc

Gents any thoughts would be appreciated, I am hoping t o use your collective experience to see if I can find that ‘right spot’ in LOS

Cheers

I would personally retire at the penny black on cowboy. I used to stay there when I wanted a crazy trip.

Walk right out of the elevator on to Cowboy. Who would want more?

I like the area around Surin Beach in Phuket. Very nice beach there and also right next to Laem Sing Beach, which is an awesome spot. It's about fifteen minutes north of Patong, which has all the modern conveniences you would require and about 20 minutes south of the airport.

Kata Noi is also a cool spot imo, which is about 15 minutes south of Patong.

That sounds lovely - can you rent a condo, or a house or something else there? Say you would like to stay 6 months, then travel around for a few weeks/months, then come back for another 6 months - what would be, in your opinion, the best arrangment?

... whatever your choice of retirement venue, you might seriously consider renting for at least 6-months, maybe a year, before commiting to purchasing... I am aware of several farang who found that living in a particular place is a bit different than holidaying there (umm, sort of like marrying a Thai bar gurl)... selling and relocating to the place they REALLY want to live is costly and agravating (umm, sort of like divorcing a Thai bar gurl).

I couldn't image retiring anywhere else in Thailand besides BKK. From there you can take side trips everywhere else. But the idea of being stuck day after day on some beach or in some village.... no thanks. At least BKK has some western culture and conveniences. And of course, everything else a man might possibly need, no matter how old and shriveled he might be.

If you want a decent infrastructure, Hospitals of a good standard & Western convenience also is the most expensive part & built out in some places.

... I guess it's all a matter of lifestyle tastes, but I agree with Quim.

... I've lived in BKK 10+ years and feel all of Thailand is well within easy reach... living down island sounds nice enough, but 'rock fever' is very real.

... if you've the resources, having a home in both is a great balance... a resort home within a convenient 2-3 hour drive of BKK... a city-center condo for when you need the amenities the big city offers... makes an easy 'get away' (in either direction).

... a 2-3 hour drive radius could include up-and-coming Khao Yai and Bang Saen, or more established Jomtien, Hua Hin, Prachuap Kiri Khan, and many village alternatives... all easily accessible enough to make an impulsive decision to hit the city for a few days, or hit the beach/hill country.

... while Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, other locales are within a 1-hour flight time of BKK, the logistics for the entire trip make weekend trips more difficult than the mere flying time.
