Before anyone utters the normal mantra UTFSE I have tried this but have not found anything which directly answers my query. In the early part of 2004, I will be relocating to BKK for at least 6 months and possibly much longer, initially I will have either an non-imm Ed or B visa. ŬI have no intention of working in the shorter term and would obviously sort out the visa/work permit issue if that situation were to change. I have a fairly flexible budget but would ideally like to keep my spending below 50k bht a month in total accommodation expenses (although I could go as high as 75k if it were necessary to get something I really liked). ŬI want to be based away from the Suk Road, preferably near Wireless/Suan Lum/Silom. What are the pros and cons of renting a serviced apartment rather than renting a regular apartment and sorting out the bills, maid service etc direct? Is it difficult to get utilities, telephone, internet access etc without a work permit? ŬIs there any significant cost difference between renting a serviced apartment and the inclusive cost of renting a decent condo, getting a maid, paying utility bills etc? I have been quite surprised at the cost of serviced apartments in my target location (which seem to approach prices in Central London here in the UK). ŬIs there any room for bargaining with owners of serviced apartments and/or regular condos? ŬIf so how much as a % of total monthly cost would it be realistic to expect as a "discount" for haggling? Hope someone can help or at least share positive and negative experiences.

bucksfun. 45 to 60 K would give you a nice serviced apartment in silom langsuan. the pricedifference is one and two bedrooms. for 6 month, I would prefer serviced. it's more expensive yes, but you don't have to find, maid laundry, pay phonebills to CAT. electricity, by by bedsheets and duvets, dishes, glasses and cutlery... but then again most normal apartments would find you a maid at reception, for 1'000 a month, laundry would be 1'000 a month. but is it nicely furnished?? does it have UBC?? do they 6 month contracts?? probably not. rtb.

I think the only difference between serviced and non-serviced apartment is the cleaning of the apartment and bed linen. Sometimes they throw in a TV set .... Even the cheapest apartments provide telephone and utilities like water and electricity. You might have an requirement for a direct telephone line. You can apply for that without a work permit (takes about a week). Telephone bills can be conviently paid at most 7 eleven stores. Internet access can be bought as prepaid packages or monthly. Also here no work permit required. About cleaning the room, you might find a maid who's also willing to stay the night Ask always what 'serviced' includes .... and what the 'service'' is worth. You might find an apartment with the same furnishing style but no cleaning for a lower price. There are also rental agencies which an help you to find an apartment to your requirement. But again, check what 'price' you would pay without their services ..

I guess I am looking at upper end properties which are nicely furnished with good equipment (e.g. modern kitchen, tvs, dvd would be nice etc). ŬAlso a real "nice to have" would be broadband internet. Thanks for the advice Dr Love re:utility bills, I hadnt appreciated this and it gives me a few more options. RTB, the prices I am seeing are on the whole 20k+ higher than I originally expected, hence my query about how much bargaining headroom there might be. This might be because I am looking for places very close to a BTS station I assume rates are cheaper further afield? ŬIs there any website showing the route of the new MTS which might help me choose location?

this is what I can do. I would ask my friend, who lives in a VERY NICE one bedroom serviced in silom, he pays 40 to 45 K not sure anymore. I've been to his place and it is not far from BTS. they probably have a website. I am back in LOS next week and try to find out. if you want. btw. did you google it?? rtb.

Bargaining depends on how much they would like you to be their new customer (room availabilty, season). I personally like President Park Soi 24, a nice suite, fully serviced is around THB 9,000 per week. Might be cheaper per month. Includes attached bedroom, sitting area, dvd, stereo, bath and shower .... Might check their website ....

RTB - Thanks for that, if you could find out the name of the block I would appreciate it. ŬI have used Google yes, and most serviced apartment/apartment searches seem to ultimately end with moveandstay.com or its various incarnations which is how I got a basic idea of possible places in the Silom area and prices (from emailing the serviced apartments direct). ŬIdeally I would like to be very close to Saladaeng BTS, but Patpong BTS would work I guess. Dr Love, I like the look of some of the President properties, also the Emporium Suites falls into my rough budget, but I dont want to be down the Sukhumvit Road at all if I can help it, especially not that far down it. In many ways my ideal location is probably the Conrad Residence but it is just seems much more expensive than other options. ŬThe new Centrepoint place at Wireless is also a possibility and rates quoted have been decent, but I havent seen the interiors/floorplans, since their website isnt up to date. Cheers bucks
