I collected my first retirement visa today: 2 pictures, a form, and my bank book. What a breeze! Getting a Non-B extended, even the 4th and 5th time, it didn't seem to matter how far in advance the paperwork was submitted, it was never finished before the expiration date. I asked Immigration to put an extra stamp in my passport, just in case I was stopped by the police, but they refused. Just stay in your house, they said.

Not only is the process so simple for a retirement visa, but I didn't have to leave the country, and they gave me credit for the time remaining on my existing Non-B, so I'm good to stay for more than a year. Furthermore, there was no additional stamp about being prohibited from employment. A friend of mine was actually able to get a work permit with a retirement visa. Isn't that a contradiction? Evidently, not in the Thai bureaucracy!

Remember to report to Immigration every 90 days.

You can go to any immigration office to do this.

There is no need for a extra 'non employment' stamp as employment is strictly forbidden.

Non-Immigrant Visa “O-A” (Long Stay)

This type of visa may be issued to applicants aged 50 years and over who wish to stay in Thailand for a period of not exceeding 1 year without the intention of working.

Holder of this type of visa is allowed to stay in Thailand for 1 year. Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited.

That your friend got a work permit on a Non O-A seems a urban legend to me.

Your link is to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but work permits are issued by the Labour Department. I also wasn't required to submit the letter of verification, or the medical certificate, as would have been required if I'd applied outside the kingdom.

When my friend renewed his visa, then he changed to Non-B.

Actually, my reference to the MFA link was related to the 'missing' non employment stamp.

And he didn't get his work permit on the retirement Non O-A but on a Non B.

He got the work permit with an O-A. When the O-A expired, about 4-5 months later, then he got the Non-B, and the work permit was extended accordingly.

This is indeed a true story. It happened in Chanthaburi, in 2006.
