Hello friends,

My first post. Read quite a bit from this forum already. Finally decided to go to Bangkok first time for 1 month from June - July 1. Have some questions for all you gurus.

1) Is it worth getting a hotel/serviced apartment with a pool since it’s the rainy season? (I love to swim if it’s hot but swimming during a lightning storm is not for me.)

2) Does anyone know anything about Alta House Apartments? ( http://www.altahouseapartment.com/ )

3) Any place you would recommend that would give a break on a one-month stay. My budget is roughly 20k-22k baht per month for hotel/apartment. I would prefer a serviced apartment with a pool, but most of those in the links section are more like 40k-60k a month. Any suggestions? Would like to be in the middle of the action and girl friendly of course.

3) I liked the description of Grace Hotel, but the posts here also say that it is swarming with bin Ladens, and I would prefer to live away from Allahs. Is this still the case?

4) Do regular hotels that charge 1200baht/day give monthly breaks like nana hotel or something similar (1200 baht/day = 36,000baht/month). Any experiences from you about how deep is the discount for monthly stay?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Nick -
your probably better off going to a Hotel, many apartments are overpriced or want deposits, and most hotels offer good discounts for monthly stay, the Nana hotel is sleazy ... but that probably why its popular ! and the Bin Ladens gather down the road at the grace hotel, not at Nana - where you can get a monthly rate of  around 18,000 bt - breakfast included, the Ambassador has a monthly rate of around 25,000 - smaller hotels like the Honey on soi 19 [ pool and breakfast incl. ] probably give you a room for 12-15,000 bt per month, also the Promenade down soi 8, small pool, quiet, but handy, again around 15-18,000 for a month. I would just arrive here, as all hotels are low occupancy now, and do not bother to book, unless you arrive late at night, in which case maybe book 1 night only, then during the day just wander in and ask - they will ALL discount -  in fact a push now for many "name" Hotels, to join a tourist promotion scheme offering rooms @ 500bt per night !  I will try and get a list of these and post here when I can -

I agree with thaiprivateeye.  Apartments want a deposit of 1-6 months in advance depending on where you go.  Also, if you choose a serviced apartment, please note that you will be responsible for paying electricty and water.  This can be very costly.  In hotels, everything is included.  Also, some hotels have rates for monthly stays, but once again, you will be responsible for electricty and water.

I would prefer hotels because whenever I leave my room to go out, I keep the air con on.  That way, when I arrive back, the room is all cool and I won't have to worry about electricty bills!  Happy hunting!

Ok what about those serviced apts.

I hear attendance is a little low even for this time of year.
Does that bring down the price of the hotel room for the day/week/month????
And of course what about the apts. are their prices still the same or have they dropped in price?

Just wondering

Al

Altahouse seems a little high plus their charge for water and electricity is overboard. I also notice that they don't include the 7% VAT in their rates. The electricity should be 5 baht per unit not 7 and water shouldnt run more than 150 baht a month, Their's is a lot more

Perhaps the rates have changed since 2003.

The post before yours was only 30 months ago.
