I heard that Taxi fares will be increasing significantly.
Stepping in the taxi will cost you already 50 bahts instead of 35 bahts.
The rate per kilometer will be fixed at 12 bahts instead of 4, 5 or 5, 5 now.
And when you'll be stuck in the trafiic, it'll cost you 3 bahts per minute instead of 1, 25.
Airport surcharge will be increase to 100 bahts.
I hope the underground MRT will open soon and that BTS lines will be extended.

Lets not ever forget Economics 101: over supply of available taxis at a given moment means lower prices, undersupply of taxis when you really need one means higher prices. This applies to everything unless there are constraints of trade such as monopolies. f*ck It !! move to Pattaya or smaller town and dont worry about the biggest city; BKK in SE Aisa * ) traffic jams. Heck use combo travel; outta town - own car or bus in town on the strip - use BTS in the soi's use scooter boys on their powerful 2 stroke 125 cc. When with packages and a lady use taxis.

First, this has been talked about for some time. Let's wait and see what happens.
Putting my old fart hat on, when you took a taxi in 1990 you had to negoiate with the taxi driver with typical rates being 50 to 80 THB. No meters in taxis. Now 1997 you have a currency devaluation of 40%.
So in 1990 dollars the taxi rates should be 70 to 110 THB $1.75 > $2.75 USD. Considering you cannot take a cab near anywhere in the UISA for $10.00 USD.
Taxi's in BKK are a steal with or without a price increase.

Correct, if your a tourist. If you live here and use taxis on a daily basis when the BTS is not available that increase soon adds up and puts a small, but nonetheless still, a dent in your pocket.
Also do you think Thai people will feel that the taxis will be a steal? Doubt it.
