I'm planning a test run at living in thailand. (Pattaya or Phuket). I want to keep living costs as low as possible, but don't want the commitment of a lease, and uncertainty of utility costs. Would staying in long term hotels where everything is included, and keeping the option of moving to a different hotel each month be a viable alternative?

I think there's a topic under Hotel Issues that would answer your questions. Look it up or use the search engine (top menu) for more info...

Hiya,

I'm currently just doing that. A lot will depend on location and price comparison, but for now I am staying in a hotel on monthly rates. Compromising on a good location with everything included, it was the best offer at the time.

I'm in BKK though and things might be different outside the capital. Research rates as much as you can before coming here and try and haggle a bit when you do get here. Good Luck.

Cheers,
TT

I been living here my 8th month now. Renting a place will save you money and thats a fact. Figure you can make a deal on a semi decent hotel for maybe 15-25k baht a month. You can rent a decent room in bangkok (pattaya would be cheaper I guess) for 5000-9000 baht a month. Right now I got a large room, maybe 8x8 meters, with cable, phone, king size bed, kitchen with electric pan, fridge & microwave, and a crapper with a shower. My clothes get washed for 35 baht a kilo. I buy beer by the case. Total: 9000 baht a month + 1500 baht for AirCon + 300 baht for water.

I can come and go as I please. I stayed in hotel my first 3 months, and after a while got tired of all the gospit and bullsh_t since if I stay with a lady for 5 days, drink and party in hotel, she gets to be friends with employees. Then when I get a new girl, there is a problem with employees lookin at me as bad man helicopter.

Just my 5 cents.

Go to nana hotel. there is a hair dresser shop there. just walk in ask if they have room for rent on monthly basis. they always have something in the 5k-10k (baht) a month price range right on soi 4 across from hillary bar.

you can also go to internet shop that is located between soi 4 and soi 6 on that little cross street in middle of soi 4. the one that sarin jai mansion is on. I think its calles KMPT travel (or some 4 letters. its the 6th business on the right side of street off soi 4. the woman that runs it has a huge family and they own a ton of propery all over soi 4 and bahind wuraburi.

if all fails just walk up and down soi 4 and look at the lamp posts. often you will see adds for places for rent (thats how my friend found a place for 5k baht a month)
