Have some of you Krungthep residents become Thai-ized? Meaning, you've come to accept Thai or Asian concepts/behavior and act accordingly now. Does seeing the typical farang sex tourist make you cringe when they unabashedly flaunt their newly gotten neon haired BG at say Gaysorn? Do you feel, although diametrically opposed to western concepts, that there is a social structure or decorum to adhere? Let's be honest :p Do some of you residents feel a bit more "enlightened" or dare I say, "snooty" towards FOB farangs, now that you know or at least comprehend a bit more of the "oriental magic" that encompasses this place? I mean, they're oblivious right? :p
Sure I'll admit, at times I do feel as such >_<. One can't help but get assimilated into this society, especially after spending a good length of time living here. But I also know where "the new guy" is coming from as well. Key is to not be stuck in the tourist mode methinks.

I admit I do cringe when I see the typical sex tourust with the obvious bargirl - particulary when he has the lack of understanding, and respect for both his host - Thailand - and the girls' feelings, to flaunt the transaction ( one can hardly term it a "relationship" ) in "respectable" places.
That said however surely this is not an "Asian" value I have adopted because I have lived here for so long, would the same chap take a "local" floosy to a respectable place in his hometown? Almost certainly not - so why make a fool of himself here, just because he is a temporary visitor?
I know lots of sex tourists have the attitude "why should they worry what others think", and I suppose if they are not embarrassed by their own behaviour, why should I be, ( lovely Thai phrase for that by the way "eye taen" ) however it does tend to get all farang tarred with the same brush - which is of course what I object to!
And on a related but slightly different subject I do wish English teachers in Thailand would not assume they are automatically entitled to the title "Acharn" as soon as they set foot in the Country!

it's a big difference whether you live in asia or you come for a holiday.
I cam to hong kong in 1990 on a three month contract. I made thailand my base in 2000.
I got addicted to asia, it's culture and it's people.
I have yellow fever.

I have yellow fever, too. Hong Kong from 1988 till 1999. Singapore 1999 to 2002. BKK from end 2002 onwards.
Yes, I cringe sometimes.

like griffin said, i keep an open mind, i've been here for 1 year and like 2 months, and i always crack a smile and feel kinda embarrassed for the 55yo fat schmuck with a toupee and an obvious BG in gaysorn, yes...
i also get a little embarrased for these obvious sex tourists when i see them 'not knowing' any thai culture, patting the girls on the head, touching their heads, kissing them in the middle of the mall, loud mouths, disrespect of thai ppl because they think they are better than them.... and make a more money than them...
i got news for them... i probably make more than these slobs and i treat all thais with respect, bg or not bg.... so the lack of respect thing kinda gets me, ya...
