It seems that every other sentence of seasoned visitors and expats here in Thailand is about how disenchanted have become with the behaviour of Thai populace towards farangs.
In the last six months or so I keep hearing and reading stories about how in certain parts of the Kingdom (particularly in BKK) farangs experience hostile attitude and icy looks directed at them, for no other reason than of being farangs. I’m not quite sure what to make of it, as my personal experience is diametrically opposite; yes I have felt at times not entirely comfortable or even being ignored and consequently given shoddy service at a pizza parlour in Siam Square but by and large I have never had any issue at all.
I don’t know how much of this is true or it’s just farangs moaning and whingeing about things - of course my experience is mostly confined to tourist places and venues or at least with a degree of farang presence. I’m about to embark on a trip in the North East and quite possibly be farang-free environment and I don’t quite know what to expect (in being an alien in their house), well at least that will go a long way in improving my pitiable grasp of the Thai lingo - may learn a little bit of Lao as bargain.

Hard to balance expectations,
with personality, and perception.
Rule of thumb anywhere in the world is to take things and actions person to person, on an individual basis.
In my way of consideration Sarge, since your thinking about it BEFORE you even go, people will find you receptive and positive with an open mind, and will likely react the same way back to you.
Sometimes it's not about 'us', it is just about getting thru another hard day, but we take it personal.

It is incredible how a government, any government can set the trend of thinking amongst the mass population.
'Group subconscious manipulation' or call it what you will the fashion or trend of a populations' attitude CAN be controlled by governments. At least for some of the time. One only has to study Germany in the mid-1930's to see how frightening and powerful this is.
Don't blame the people blame the nutters at the top !

I have not noticed a change over the last 2 years. When I walk around I still get that same look. I can see in there eyes.
