I need to make a Visa run before the 31st of December. I went to a travel agent a few days ago to book a train ticket to Nong Khai and he said they are all sold out. He of course has a friend with a VIP bus with free pick up from your home or room. I hate the bus but I agreed. I ask where the bus leaves from and he would not tell me. He says a mini van will pick me up at 4 pm. I catch the minibus at 4pm and listen to 2 hours of Thai music and watch a Karoke VCD. We drive all around BKK picking up people and listening to this awful music. It then occurs to me that I died while f_cking my Thai girl this morning and this van was my own personal hell. I was very convinced of this for some time before we finally stop. We stop on the small Soi right next to Hua Lumphong. I could have caught a cab there in 15 minutes if I knew thats where we were going. They have plastic lawn chairs lined up outside for everyone to sit in. This place is the loudest and smokiest place Ive ever seen in BKK. All these people are sitting out there in their lawn chairs waiting on a bus thats not supposed to show up for 2 more hours. They were drinking beer, chatting and acting as if this is just normal. I walk into Hua Lumphong to see when the next train would be going to Nong Khai with an available seat. Its leaving in just 3 hours. I am now really pissed because they lied to get me on this bus and Ive been forced to listen to Thai music. I bought the train ticket, walked back across the street and told them what crooks they were and hopped a taxi to MBK so I could vent...................

http://www.railway.co.th/seatcheck2/mainseat.html if you want to check rail tix availability. It only works sometimes -- right now it's available. The Engish version is permanently f*cked, it seems, but you can sort it out pretty quickly.
Note that the date must be entered as DD/MM INCLUDING the leading zeroes if applicable.
The first drop box is the three lines: North, South, and North-East in that order.
The second is outbound from and inbound to Bangkok in that order.
Setting the Language in your browser to Thai (from the menu bar) seems to help it work better.
Last note, it's not exactly real-time. Not only is their system clock off, but the updates happen only sporadically throughout the day. Still, it should work as a rough guide if you are doing advance planning especially for holiday travel.
