I went to the travel agent yesterday and she said it was frantic there. After the reported crackdown of six people in the Kao Shun road area for overstaying on VISA's her office was overrun with people trying to get extensions.

I guess you cannot get an extension without a return airplane ticket. If you try to get an extension after the fact at Thai immigration they hold you in immigration detention and you have to arrange things by fax and outside help, and then you are escorted to the airport. The other choice is to put up a large bond.

Now recently, they just had raids in Patataya cheap hotels, condos & guest houses and netted many people with invalid paperwork. BigDUSA, I hope your paperwork was OK.

It used to be no problem. Simply overstay and pay your fine at the airport upon exiting. But now a day the Land of No Problems is becoming the land of problems.

If you are in jeopardy of over-staying, it is time to take that trip to Cambodia.

I'm on a 60 day visa. One thing I don't play with is visa.

Good job.

Since you are there first hand, what is the word on street about this VISA crackdown there?

The "word on the street" is irrelevant, it's the words in the law that matter.

Calling it the "Land of No Problems" is misleading. It's always been a courtesy and nothing more that you could get out of big overstay problems with a small fine. Too many people abused that kindness and now the chickens have come home to roost. Tough sh_t.

Speaking as somebody who has gone to great lengths and expense to keep his visa in order at all times, I'm rather enjoying the discomfort of the lazy arrogant dumbasses who are getting hauled in. Screw 'em.

There are lots of words in the law including prostitution being illegal. Previously, the land of no problems, meant you just paid a little baht for problems such as VISA Overstays, traffic tickets, minor infractions. Now this attitude is changing. It is the "word on the street" that I am interested on why the change.

1. Want the farang out of here.
2. Problems in the South prompting crackdown on illegal immigrants.
3. Some police officer wants a promotion.
4. All of the above.

Many reasons for selective crackdowns.

I will overrun by two days when I leave on Sunday.

I was told when I arrived that it would be no problem; the immigration officer said so.

Should I worry? I have a return ticket and am not a backpacker (does it make a difference?).

I would go to the Thai immigratrion office with ticket in hand and get an extension before the actual overstay.

At 1,900 baht....

As said, in another thread, I've overstayed my visa for about 8 months in a row. Never got any problem at all.... think it will be different suddenly this month?

BEWARE.
I had heard of people being told it was ok to over stay, just pay small fine when enquiring about a visa extension.
But then when they leave not only paying the fine they have there passports marked accordingly and this poses a problem when re-entering LOS.

The length of the overstay is the main driver here; they are primarily targeting those who have overstayed by months as opposed to days. My daughter went out Monday morning and was 8 days past expiration: the procedure was the same as always (short trip to the immigration cashier, payment of fine, and then clearance to proceed). It's also interesting to note that four of the six "tourists" they apprehended were Nigerians... this can hardly be coincidence. The police are sending a signal not only to individuals who significantly overstay, but also to the hotels and guesthouses that fail to check the passports of their customers as required by law.
