I saw a very little ad in BKK Post this day, with only a mobile tel.# and an yahoo email address, offering this service.
Any long term residence who knows about you can apply for permanent residence certificate, without having a 'real' permit.
I find it "dodgy" to advertise without even giving out an office number, any comments on this?

I went through the process of obtaining Certificate of Residence a few years back. The application was 3 inches thick with all the documents required! My accountant handled the paperwork and, without the help of a visa lawyer, we managed to get to the final approval stage before everything ground to a halt.
Because of the quota system the granting of residency seems to be one of those areas that attracts rather high "processing fees" and I've heard of cases where people have paid up to 200K to oil the wheels. Unless you have some pretty high connections there may not be any other alternative.
And it doesn't end there, once you have the Certificate of Residence you must obtain an Alien Registration book from the local police station within 7 days otherwise a fine will be levied.
I wouldn't trust anyone advertising this service as there are just too many steps along the way for someone to gouge additional fees out of you.

For those of you who take a flight to Laos or Burma for your visa run, there are some very good deals to Singapore at the moment due to SARS. If that is not a problem and personally l worry a lot more about Bangkok traffic than SARS, then there are lots of 3 day/2 night packages including accomodation on offer for 4200bht plus tax.
At the Skydome Zone C, ground floor of the World Trade Centre this weekend there is a travel expo. Singapore Airlines are doing the 4200bht deal there, pretty good for a major carrier. Tickets purchased must be used within 2 months which is when my next visa has to be updated so l think we might be taking up this offer.

It's more like 800,000 baht (or 65,000/month, verified), and you can't get a work permit on the retirement visa.
Don't know a thing about the 'residence permit' they are talking about.

About the cheap tickets in the World Trade Center, guys; it's a ZOO down there today..... I got 2 tickets to Sydney for all in all TB 35,000 incl. fees.
If you wanna travel within Asia you can get a really good deal this weekend, but be patient down there

Yes it was very busy. We got there for the 10am start and it took half an hour. For less than 10000bht (tax included) we got return flights for 2 to Singapore on Singapore Airlines, 2 nights at a 4 star hotel, (there were even a couple of 5 star hotels available) airport transfers, free ticket for the hop on tourist bus, free entry to Sentosa plus one other major tourist attraction e.g. Jurong Bird Park. Looked up some travel websites and the 2 nights at our hotel alone were almost the price of our entire package.
As expat said, very busy so availability Sunday may not be as good, however worth a try for anyone interested.
