Like most people who've been to Thailand once or twice, I've come home wishing I could live there. ÝReading through the posts on this board, I followed a link to the Bangkok Post classifieds (Thanks BK!) and lo and behold there was a job advertised: Ýfor a international company that requires a specialized skill that I have, I am very qualified for the position, in the US atleast it would be a hard position to fill now, the ad did not say it was for Thais only. ÝThe ad was very specific that they wanted and English speaker. ÝImmediately dreams of working in Bangkok and being paid a western salary filled my head. ÝI sent in my CV ASAP, and am hoping for the best. ÝBTW, I am following other job search venues as well.

What do you think my chances are? ÝOn the downside, I am thinking they may get a trillion other applicants or they only be looking for Thais. ÝBTW, the job is in petroleum industry engineering.

Now for wishful thinking. ÝIF I am offered the job, how would the salary compare with a western salary? ÝWould it be a mere fraction or might it be close to what I'm getting now? ÝAre you or do you know of others who are getting close to western salary there? ÝI know it is cheaper to live there and I would accept a considerable reduction in pay. ÝBut how much of a decrease is reasonable to accept 20%, 50%, 70%?

chilli, thanks for the support, yeah I agree. ÝI would take 50% if it was offered too. ÝThat would be enough to be comfortable there. ÝThe job would fit well in my CV as well. Ý

I wonder though if I would have the self control to sock away a little money for the future. ÝDo any of the expats living in Bangkok manage to put away savings? Ý

IZ, sorry to hear about that. ÝI'm fully expecting the same thing for me too. ÝDo you still check for job vacancies?

I will post anything I hear back from them or if I make any other progress.

The chances to get job in BKK,is close to 0.If you dont have the right connection or you send by international company.Thai secretary in company that you apply, will not proceed your application, and will not write you back...You asking why? I donno,Thai way I think. She's affraid that her English not good,or she's affraid of too much responsibility,or she's lazy bitch. From 100 application I send,I got only few answers.
Sad but true....:-(

Sounds to me like a different approach is needed?
Foot in the door salesman?
Actually these days I don't think there is a great deal of difference from the 'West' ?????
If you alocate your self one month's stay in Thailand.
Armed with CV's. Knock on doors. Dress SMART , talk to the secretaries. Network. Get into the expat scene(corporate or otherwise). Hang out in the 'expat' bars. Talk to as many people as possible. Then you may make some headway. A CV through the post is just that. Being there in person is something different?????
Determination is the key to many things ?

Put yourself in the place of Thai managers with hiring powers. They know exactly how badly and WHY most farang applicants would like to get a job in Bangkok. They know we want to make more money than the locals and f_ck their women too. They know better than to enough to indulge these fantasies of ours.

Moreover there's quite a wave of xenophobia in most asian workplaces. In Hong Kong they hate gweilos. Singapore too. I'd be willing to bat the same goes for KL, Jakarta, Tokyo etc. Considering the spectacle a lot of farangs make while theyre having a good time in Bkok, i'm sure the locals have noticed, dont you think?

I think the best way to work in LOS may be to actually swing a transfer if your company has an office there. I'm working on it but I know its going to be a long process, may not ever happen.

Dont mean to discourage you Tourist but I just had to get this out of my system. Sure feels good!

jholmesjr,
I see what you're saying, but in some cases actual specific qualifications should be able to get you past that farang monger motive e.g. tourist clearly stated he had the exact skills & experience for the job & most likely they may not find a local with those skills or they may actually prefer a farang with his great english skills & western way of thinking...
just a though

Point taken Chilli but after watching hiring patterns in the corporate world (at least in Singapore) I've come to this conclusion.

Ability to do the job is the price of entry. But there's a lot more that motivates employers to hire the 'right' candidate. 'Getting along' is probably the most important. Bosses are more pre-occupied with other considerations. They are thinking, will this guy try to upstage me if he's that qualified, can I trust him not to f_ck me over etc etc. So in the end they are most likely to hire someone they have worked with before, are buddies with and so on. Sad but very much a reality in asia. Thailand has never been colonised, the same may be true of its corporate side too.

Almost impossible to work in a local company, but if you work for your own country company which have offices in Thailand, well, you might earn more money than at home.

I don't know where you come from, but don't expect the expenses to be so much cheaper, working in S.E. Asia you'll be involved in some expats community duties and standards, which might be quite formal and conservative.

You might try to have your own business in Thailand as some expat did, but don't expect it to be easy... good luck !!!

The very best should be to rob a bank and come to LOS to enjoy the money...
