I have just heard that the Thai authorities are now asking for a degree as well as a TEFL to teach English ???

Anybody know if there is any truth in this story ?

I suppose one could always buy one ?
Where ??

In practice, you don't need a degree to get a TEFL job - although they'll probably ask for one. If you have a TEFL certificate and do well in your 'demonstration lesson', this kind of formal requirement is easily overlooked in LOS. Do you know what you're doing? Do you look presentable? Do you come across as responsible and reliable? If the answers are yes, this will count for more than a degree with many employers.

Your problem would be getting a work permit for a teaching job. Then again, you don't really need a work permit. TiT.

Yeah, you can get a degree forged. I wouldn't show this to the Immigration people though unless you have a tame contact. It wouldn't be the first time they've seen a forged degree.

I'll be doing a 4 week English teaching course at ECC soon so I will let all the brothers know how that goes. Then I have to find a job.

I used to teach English to the children in my housing area. No TEFL required. I did it on Saturday & Sunday mornings. I charged 40 baht for two hours. Each day I taught for two hours. I had about 15 - 20 children each day. Nice little set up until the kids start getting out of hand.

This paid for my beer, TTM & extras.

As long as you don't advertise, and keep it relatively small scale, you would be okay teaching out of your home. Which, if you ask any English teacher in Thailand, is where the money is anyway. I made approx. 1,500 baht in two days, and I could have charged way more money and still got the kids to come. But I felt sorry for the kids that didn't have alot of money, so I kept it cheap. Call me a softy

I've taught briefly in Isaan , a few years back , Tefl and degree, in a state run school. I was amazed at how poor the students spoken word was in comparison to the written word, mainly down to confidence and poor examples.
The Thai English teachers also had difficulty holding a simple conversation with me.
Its very hard to teach constructively without doing a Tefl course, you can get so far, then it becomes hit and miss.
