enjoyguy,

I stayed there for a week in November in a Topaz Suite. This was in Tower 3 which is across the road from the other 2 Towers.
Meals: Very good buffet breakfast for 120 baht. 24 hour room service good food.
Service: I found it good in most sectors. I did find people at the front desk had a degree of attitude but apart from that everyone else very pleasant.
Girl Friendly; Definitely in Tower 3. At night TG has to show her ID which is kept until she leaves, or failing that you have to sign her in. I would regard this as being a help rather than a hindrance. Anytime I entered or exited the building there always seemed to be some guy bringing in a TG.
Supplies; I assume you mean sundry items. There is a 7/11 in Tower 2 which is open till late and another 7/11 down the Soi which is open 24hours.

I was very satisfied with GP and it is a great location for most of the attractions.

enjoyguy -

I have stayed at the Grand President many times, though none within the last year.  Recently I have been staying up at President Park on Soi 24 to remove myself somewhat from the farang jungle.  As it happens I will be back at the Grand President next week so I would be interested in any more recent experiences comparing this hotel now versus 1-2 years ago.

I will tell you that I always rather liked the place.  Edible breakfast, normally pretty decent rooms, fairly nice staff, reasonable room service food, guest friendly (if you don't mind the desk gaurd taking or at minimum copying girls ID's unless you pay him not too) and very centrally located to NEP and Cowboy (as well as S7 Biergarden, Eden, Thermae, etc, etc).

If you stay at the GP and you are a newbie I can advise you totally avoid the parked taxi's stationed in front of the hotel - they will almost certainly attempt to rip you off.  Don't let that put you off the GP though as the taxi mafia does this infront of many tourist type hotels.  Just flag down a cab or walk a few meters away from the hotel and get a taxi driver who will willingly use his meter.

Some other things you might be interested in.  The GP has gym and pools facilites - but I have never been impressed with either in the past.  There is a salon in the GP (Tower II) which I think is called Senz Salon (or something like that) - I was never much impressed with the girls and they never performed either haircuts or massages (even with extra's) that ever came close to meeting with my approval.  The minimart in Tower II is very convenient - overpriced for sure, but still convenient.  I am told they now offer High Speed Internet and have infact arranged it for my room (though I am anticipating that I'd probably be better off just buying another Loxinfo package based on reports I have read about the actual speed).

The best deal for a room at the Grand President is, in my opinion, the Royal Suite.  You should be able to get a decent deal if you negotiate properly.  One note here - if you intend to pay with a credit card, make sure to request that you NOT have to pay a surcharge.  They will charge you somewhere between 2-5% to use varying credit cards to pay for your stay unless you make sure your booking excludes this fee.

One major issue I have with the Grand President is the damn birds.  If you are on a lower floor you could be subjected to this horrific aviary next door whose winged residents began screaming, chanting and chirping at the top of their lungs right around, or shortly before, the crack of dawn.  I happen to like Tower II better than the others, but if you chose Tower II make sure to get an upper floor to be insulated from the bird noise.

That is all I can think of at the moment.  If anyone has any more recent information I would be interested to hear it as well.

I posted this on a another thread, but in case you missed it, you might find it helpful...

I stayed at Grand President on Soi11, first in the Topaz suite and then in a 'grand' suite (i think?).  First impression was good, the main lobby is quite nice, after i checked in though i found out that my room was across the street, i guess that's where all the Topaz suites are at?  Not quite as nice on this side, i was a little freaked about having to walk down a dark alley to my entrance, but turned out to be no problem.   The Topaz room is ok, the furnishings are showing a bit of wear, but nothing too drastic, the only things that bothered me was the stain on the headboard, the cut rate contruction of the kitchen and the slight musty aroma.  I will say that the bathroom was very nice, though hot water took awhile in the shower.  The big feature of the Topaz suite is the MIRRORS !  Full wall mirrors on either side of the bed and pretty much all the facing wall !  Makes for great spectating of extra curricular activities, and some of my dates were really into it.  Also the night time security guy is cool, i could never understand a word he was saying, but he was fun - he'd sign my date in, and give me thumbs up when she wasn't looking...

After a week down south, i came back to the GP but they were out of the Topaz suites, so i took one of the Royal suites (or it might have been a Grand Suite?) the room itself was much nicer, no problem at all there, it was great.  Even though the room was much nicer, i found myself missing the mirrors of the Topaz, It had mirrors on the facing wall only, built into the shelves.  Not quite the same panoramic effect.

One more thing i liked about GP, the rooms all have a CD player, which is nice, because i'd rather have my own music than listen to VJs on mtv.  Beside i don't want my guests attention on the TV...

So all this said, i do recommend the GP, but i am looking to stay someplace different on my next trip.  Ideally i'd like something closer to nana and cheaper than GP, thinking about the majestic...

topaz was about $44 / night,  grand was $52  i think?

$24 / night sounds like a pretty good deal... how'd you get that again?

A couple more tidbits about the GP
- yes it is walking distance to nana, but i'll tell you after a couple of nights i wasn't walking so well !!!  : )
- it can be bit of a wait for hot water in the shower, gotta get the faucet thing pointed just right.
- the swimming pool is not heated, it might even be refridgerated, it is very cool... too cool for me.
- the breakfast buffet is very good, the eggs look kinda runny, but very tasty!

 try booking it through http://www.asiatravel.com

yup, been staying there for my last few trips!! actually, i perfer the location of the Topaz suites (tower 3). lots of privacy, i mean its differnt from others where u r greeted by the receptionist and other guest when u r in the lobby!!! this place is really kinda of causal and theres only one friendly guard at the lobby. except the rooms are getting a bit run down, everythings ok!!

not exactly, i hate the traffic along the Soi !! can be quite a jam just to get to the main road, Shukhumvit!!! unless u don mind taking a 5 mins walk? if u need a cab, yup don ever take those taxis parked outside the hotel. i guess they recongised me by now, cos i always turn them down politely and flag a taxi right in front of them!! haha....

umm... comes to think of it, nice location!! pretty quite and peaceful area!! and easily accessable to all major "places of interest".

what am i talking??? damn, must be the pre-bkk blues!!!

will be there between 9 Jan - 14 Jan! hope to catch up with u guys!!

 regards,
 chrisboy

Stayed at GP in September . Had a Royal Suite on one of the upper floors and was quite happy with the facility and the attitude of the staff. If I would walk in in the evening with a guest the security people, with whom I made sure I made acquaintance early in my stay, would merely salute me and then scramble to open doors or get the elevator. I recommend the facility and will return there next month.
