"jaypoet apologies for said comment."

Actually, I was humoring you out of an attempt to stay civil.

"But it never ceases to amaze me that many ( not all ) Americans assume that the USA is the centre of the universe,,,, example ( chatting on ICQ) where you from,,, reply L.A,,, my reply wow Lake Argyle,, its a beautiful place.
And as stated a $ is not necessarily a US$, yes the world has other countries."

(roll my eyes). Actually, I meant Fijian dollars and Mel Gibson is an overrated actor.

While I certainly agree many of us Americans suffer from a superiority complex, there are quite a few people out there that suffer from an inferiority complex as well.

BTW I never knew there was a Sydney in Australia – I thought the only Sydney was in Florida (USA). Is Sydney Australia a big city? You can learn something new on this board everyday. 555

Get over yourself,, yes it's a BIG world and the USA is not the centre of all known life.
The American dollar is NOT king, in fact most experts now believe that world commodity prices will be quoted in Euros within the next few years.
I see that you may in fact have the arrogance that I most hate in American people ( not all but some),,,, LA can be Lake Argyle or any other number of places ( I admit LA may be a poor example for what I am trying to convey) why should people automatically be expected to realise it is in the USA.
I always respond when asked my home city " Sydney Australia",,,,, I do NOT assume everyone thinks I am Australian ( there is a city called Sydney in Canada).
When I reply to costing I use AUD$ ( or BAHT) clearly defining the currency, once again not arrogantly assuming what people will think ( often reply in Thai BAHT here as it should be).

The need to show precision in location has thousands of examples here are just a few.......
Cairo ( there is one in Illinois)
Birmingham ( there is one in Alabama)
Florence ( once again one in Alabama)
Boston ( there is one in Massechusetts)

Cheers and get out to see that the world does NOT revolved around the USA, but the USA is just a small piece of the world.

Cheers

Mel, it's quite obviuos that you have a strong dislike of and/or inferiority complex towards the USA. Too bad as I'm quite confident you are in the minority of both countries. The US and Australia have a very long history of friendship and a close bond that hopefully will continue forever. Australia is a true friend to the US, and especially in this time in history, it is much appreciated by us Americans.

I do hope you are able to get over your attitude or, in the least, not choose any feeble excuse to vent your opinions and thus give you and your fellow compatriots a bad name. It's kind of ironic that your criticize America for coments / attitudes by certain Americans but you do the same thing (ie. giving a bad impression of Aussies) for your country.

Geez, I would think that those who live here in Thailand, or are visiting regularly enough to justify posting here, would be getting laid enough to be "happy campers" and not resort to lame attacks on our respective countries. I would hope you drop your poor attitude and weak attacks on the US as you are doing Australia and Aussies no service in this endeavor. Enough said.

I truly do hope that the US and Australia will continue enjoy our close friendship as it's dearly appreciated and needed these dark days......

And by the way Jaypoet, I think the REAL Mel Gibson is a great actor and a total stud. By the way, he is also a good ambassador for Aussies and loves the US.

" Wrong and a bad way to start...... I am a GREAT supporter of my American brothers and especially American foreign policy."

" Good point, yes we love non arrogant Americans and YES I will never forget what the good old US of A did for us Aussies in WW2"

more from da-cat:

"Nope wrong again,,,,,,,I will probably never get over my attitude toward overt arrogance.
Question here,, are you saying all Australians will be judged by my opinions???

My dislike of what I consider arrogance will stay with me for all my days. This is 'in fact" an Australian common trate.

God bless America ( well only the non arrogant ones).

Cheers

If you want to argue politics and bash countries, go to the Guardian talk board where that's all people do - and it gets very tedious. Let's focus on discussing and exchanging info on something that's far more interesting and we all like, having a good time in Bangkok.

Bottom line point of this thread is that I very much recommend the President Solitaire and while a bit pricey for Bangkok, it's very cheap by western standards for that quality of apartment/hotel.

It is more important than ever that everyone with an interest in a free and democratic world keep together these days! I am a friend of the USA - and all other nations as well who do not want to fight or command the rest of us........ ! We only have one little globe in the entire universe and the past years tensions are indeed worrying.

And now back to the thread: I can also strongly recommend the President Solitaire. It is a good hotel in Bangkok and for those who are interested that kind of place - it is also very close to Q-bar!

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill...geeez.

PLEASE, NO US OR OZ bashing here.

I can see where Mel was coming from, ie, JP quoted in $ so it could have been US, Aussie or Canadian. Mel asked the question, but should have left it at that, no need for the arrogance part Mel. JP corrected his comment and apologized.

But Mel does raise a good point re prices. Anyone who types on BTF and comments about prices, could take a little time and convert any currency to the Baht. It is typed by one person and viewed by hundreds and hundreds on here. Surely that is not an extreme burden on the writer.

I am from the Windsor/Richmond area near the Blue mountains just outside of Sydney Australia. My family are animal lovers and we lived on a couple of acres, so we had a minature zoo. Kangaroos, wombats, dingoes and many Australian birds. During the Vietnam war, many many US service personnel came to OZ for R & R. Our place seemed to be little America for a while.

The US servicemen wanted a few basic things, pussy, beer, steaks and WHERE ARE THE KANGAROOS. So you guessed it, 15mins from the Air Base we had car loads of them visiting our place and we did not ask for a cent. But they insisted on presenting presents to my family and all of them were great people, courteous, never had a problem. Some became good friends of my Dad and Mum and would come around and partake of some good home cooking and also got on the piss with Dad. I hold fond memories of those days.

Now today, I look at the US as another part of Australia. I feel more aligned with them than any other country. My family arrived in Australia around 1820 in chains from you know where and somewhere down the track some of my forebears intergrated with the black fellas, no problems.

Australia and the US will always have a strong bond of friendship and not just in times of war.

Barrafish.

I agree that President Solitaire is a nice hotel, I have enjoyed its good service and quality rooms previously. I am sure both our American and Aussie friends would enjoy a stay there because of our similarity in tastes and expectations.

P.S I hope the reception area staff hasn't changed,,,,, last time I was greated by a smiling "nine" that got my stay off to a great start.

I'm pretty confident that IBFarang was being sarcastic about not knowing Sydney, AU. If not, then he does indeed neet to "get out from under the rock" . I will add one more comment on Sydney though....had my first chance to visit Down Under in late 2005 for work and was lucky enough to go to Sydney.....BEAUTIFUL city and especially liked the Darling Harbour area. Went there for work but had a blast after hours as well. Actually just turned down a job offer there as I can't give up living in Thailand (am addicted to the Babes here of course) BUT I did seriously consider it for a bit.

Cheers Mate.
