I had the opportunity to stay in the Centre point on Petburi Road during my trip from October 16th, to October 27th. Turns out I got a pretty damn nice deal, and ended up staying at what I would consider to be the BEST place I have experienced in BKK so far.

I booked at one of the 'agencies' at the airport, mostly because I wanted to give it a try. My first choice was the Omni Towers (which I was tod was not available to this agency), but how about the Centre Point. I heard about them having Broadband internet in every room, so I wa snaturally interested, but acted aloof. The first 'quote' was for 2300 Baht, which was more than the online reservations, which was quickly reduced to 2000, and the finalized at 1800 baht, all inclusive.

The place was gorgeous, though tucked away. It certainly doesn't stand out (which was actually an advantage in my book), with the central vehicle entrance almost camouflaged, and the Petburi road entrance via a convenience store.

I went for one of the standard studios, as that was enough for me, but made sure I booked a double - which gives me two breakfast coupons per day (came in handy, I tell you). The room is a standard, but very nice, studio deal, with bed, kitchenette, nice bathroom, and wall / desk/ entertainment center (TV, Stereo and VHS only - though DVD  and VCD players can be rented).

The big feature was in-room internet - and it delivered in that regard. None of the 'we call it broadband, but it's really a shared modem' crap - this felt like bona-fide broadband, and all you had to do was plug into the rj-45 jack under the desk. Presto, you're on-line.

There are residential facilities on the 4th floor - fitness room (well equipped and staffed), sauna, open air pool, and the breakfast/coffee shop next to it.

The 4th floor also holds an office of the booking agency, and in the future, it's easier to just head to Centre Point, go to the 4th floor, and get a voucher. I did this the second time I stayed there, and was able to get the rate down to 1700 Baht per night.

The front desk stuff was professional and helpful to a fault, the doorman, an security guys saluted every time I came back 'home', and the place couldn't be more girl friendly - no bother, not even batting a single eye. In fact, the staff was more than helpful to every one of my guests.

I stayed on the 8th floor, which gave me abeautiful view over the park, and the convention centre. I want to try scoring a higher room next time, though

Best of all, Pantip Plaza was right across the road, NEP was a 50 Baht cab ride away, as was Patpong. Airport ride is the usual 160 Baht.

Excellent location, great service, good prices, excellent rooms, and excellent amenities and facilities. Can't give the place enough high marks. Heck, I would suggest that none of the brothers stay anywhere but there in the future.

Thanks for the review on Centre Point. I am looking for a place with true broadband in the rooms as well, so will check this one out for next month's visit.

Mr Alan
Novotel Lotus is probably a better location. It is on Soi 33 and close to BTS Skytrain stop for quick access to NEP and other places (up until midnight). I don't know anything about the internet connection available in the room (nothing about that on their website).

About Internet Connection in Novotel Lotus, if you download their brochure
http://www.accorhotels-asia.com/ado/hotels/pdf/1712_en.pdf
when they speak about Accomodation they said:
"Novotel Lotus features 224 superior and deluxe rooms, executive and duplex suites, all tastefully appointed to the highest standards, incorporating hyper-fast Broadband Internet Access."

Mr Alan
I would send them an email and ask about it, especially the price. Nowhere does it say that the internet access is free.

Novotel Lotus does not offer free internet - they charge by the hour, and by the day.

I don't recall the amounts, but the daily amount was some number of hundred baht.

Don't know the speed, either, as I didn't have a computer with me when I stayed there.

I'm trying to decide between Centre point and President solitaire. Both have pro's and con's.

CP: closer to suk and great high speed internet.
PS: seems to have better rooms, DVD and large jacuzzi but seems like quite a walk to suk.

Just how far a walk is it from PS to suk? I know that the platinum room has a jacuzzi but does the solitaire suite also have it? All the CP's seem the same. Do you guys think one is better than the other?

I've read all I could find on both these places but I still don't know which to pick. I know personal preferance has a lot to do with it but I would appreciate any advice you guys can give. I'll be there in a couple of weeks and want to buy you guys a round of drinks if you're available.

cheers

D, I stayed at PS back in November, and also looked at a couple of Center Point locations for that and the upcoming trips. As a point of clarification, CP Phetchaburi (the topic of hzink's original post) is nowhere close to Sukhumvit -- it's on Soi 15 Phetchaburi Road, about a 10-min. ride by cab from Suk (with no traffic and before 6 pm when the left turn from Ratchadamri to Phetchaburi goes away and you need to go around Phayathai Road adding 15 min. and TB50 to the trip). There is another Center Point on Suk Soi 10, but it's not as nice as the one on Phetchaburi (it's still nice, just not as impressive), and still a bit away from Suk.

President Solitaire is on Suk Soi 11, but on the corner of the far elbow of Soi 11 and a crosscutting soi that connects Soi 3 and 15. It's about a 10 min. walk back to Suk if you're walking and 15-20 if you're stralling. They have a custom tuk-tuk (a nice and clean one) that would take you back to Suk between 7 am and 9 pm; after that you're on your own.

I found this walk to get on my nerves, and while the place itself is nice (not stunning, just nice), the location and the quality of food/breakfast didn't put it on my return-to list. Plus, I found their management to be a bit on the stuffy side, borderline unfriendly. By contrast, everybody at the two Central Point places I visited (Suk and Phet) were extremely nice and friendly.

By the way, only Platinum Suite has jacuzzi tubs, the rest have regular soak tubs. The Platinum Suite, IMHO, has the best layout overall, with a separate foyer area and the bedroom nicely laid out.

Cheers,
-Polar Bear
