I will be in Singapore for a few days starting in a few weeks. I looked at hotel, guest house, hostel sites and info on this site. The cheapest I've seen is Hotel81 Princess in Geyland at $40 US per night. There are other hotel81 in the same area at around the same price. Most guest houses are more expensive. Hostels start at $30 US for a single room with shared bathroom, but they have bad reviews, rooms are small, and located far from anything. I'd like a private room, shared bathroom if necessary, and near public transportation to the action/restaurants. It doesn't have to be gf. I realize Singapore is pricy, but I guess I'm used to Cambodia/Thailand prices. Thanks.

If anyone recently has been to Singapore and knows of hotels or guest houses under $40 US that are decent, let me know. Based on what I've seen online, most hotels and guest houses for $50 US and under have small rooms. Its for a few days, so I'll deal with the small room. I don't stay at hostels, but would consider it to save money.

If you plan on finding a cheap hotel, here's some info. I stayed at Fragrance Pearl Hotel in Geylang. I paid $36 US including all taxes and booked through agoda. Hotel was right in the middle of red light district, with women right across the street 24 hours. I presume the hotel was guest friendly, but based on the high prices compared to Thailand, I passed on it. I thought the women in Thailand were better than there anyways. The room was a little small, but big enough for up to 2 people. It was a modern room and everything worked. I didn't get much noise facing the back. The other fragrance hotels nearby were around the same price and I figure the rooms are about the same. Some late night food places nearby and cheapest food I saw was 3 sgd for noodles. The room came with a water boiler, so I made most of my own food. If you want to see all the tourist stuff without rushing, I'd suggest up to 5 days. Sentosa Island was a little busy, but some of the beaches were quiet and relaxing.

Haising Hotel on Bencoolen, near Little India, SG$50-55, don't be fooled by the extra $5 for a 'window' - it's little more than the size of a cinderblock, 2 meters up on the wall. Lets the fluorescent light in all night. Extremely small rooms, but clean, and helpful staff. The rooms are clean, too...HOWEVER, definitely NOT guest friendly. Plenty of Hotel 81s for that... There just isn't much between the low end, like the Haising, and the top end. hs

Another worth looking at is the Santa Grand Aljunied - Lorung 22 Geylang. A smaller boutique size hotel in a quiet area. A little bit more expensive at around $US50 on Agoda but rooms much nicer than Fragrance or Hotel 81 Chains. I stayed there in Nov last yr and was v impressed with the newly refurbished decor and fittings. Another plus is the 10 minute walk to the metro - along the way you see lots of street walkers and many houses featuring (among others) beautiful chinese girls.
