I finally did get to LA Cafe during my trip to PI. Fist night, I took home a stunner 22-year old for short time at Mansion Boulevard (thanks for the tip on that hotel!). I paid 1200p, which I was just fine with.
Spent two days in Angeles and had a great old time, which I will report on later.
Got back to Manila for my last night in PI and took home a so-so looker for 1000p ST. I usually don't go for the 'so-so' type, but she and I just sort of hit it off. She called herself Concheta and said she was from an island that took two days to reach by ship (and that she was leaving at about 2:00am that night.
Took her back and did the deed. Nice and relaxing lay around, watched some TV, ate some (terrible) pizza. When it's time for her to go, she asks me to go downstairs with her, as she sometimes gets hassled by guards at various hotels. I happily obliged.
I get back to the room and want to call to confirm my flight in the morning, since I've been warned that Philippines Air has a tendency to overbook. Uhoh, can't find the phone! Not in any of my other pants or in any of my luggage. Come to think of it, when I'm checking my luggage, I realize my iPod is gone, too! Furiously unpacking everything, I conclude that this is, at least, the extent of the damage.
I call the number from the hotel phone (0809-766-5240, if anybody ever happens to see it on their own phone!) several times. On the umpteenth attempt, I hear a shrill, cackling laughter as 'Concheta' answers and has a good time over my misfortune.
Down to the guards and I find out her real name is JoAnne (can't remember last name!), but this does me no real good. Back to LA Cafe and, of course, she's nowhere to be found.
So, 1000 for Concheta, 8000 phone, roughly 10000 for the iPod, and this was the most expensive lesson I've ever had to learn! I think I just got too complacent with being able to trust Thai girls (which is probably something I should try to stamp out, too!).
This is not a PI-bashing post, of course, just wanted to share my experience. On the whole, I had a great time. This last night just left a bad taste in my mouth, so I don't think I'll be heading back there anytime soon.

In one hotel that I stayed in, I would always get a call from the reception, who would ask me if everything was in order, everytime the girl left the room. Now, that is a good policy, and she must have used you to bypass that system when you walked down with her.

Very slick on her part
I had a $100 bill stolen while I slept, (alone), it was hidden in a roled up pair of socks buried in a drawer amongst other clothes, possibly a hotel worker as door was locked
I feel fortunate they didn't cut my throat too, some real desperados in P.I.
Very unlikely I'll ever return there, don't need that kind of hospitality
Brian, you took that substantial loss pretty well, good for potential visitors to know, certainly understand why you may not go back, plus the lousy pizza

Yeah, it was a pretty slick move on her part to get me to come down there with her. Perhaps that's something that might ring some alarm bells for folks in the future.
As for taking the loss well, I think I've sort of had this coming for a while now. Having lived in Bkk for three years without incident, I was pretty much begging for something like this to happen if I kept pushing my luck! In the end, it's just stuff, I guess.
I can look at this as an opportunity to combine phone and iPod into a fancy new iPhone! Time to start saving....

Without trying to hex myself, I think the point is, Freelancers are a lot more dangerous proposition than Bar Girls or Go Go dancers. Yes you pay-more upfront but in most cases you have a reference to go back if things don't workout or she rips you off!
That said, I have been lucky or chosen well, plus been fairly careful in Manila when taking home Fl's! So far so good, including last week! Look at the fun to be had in LA Cafe without rose coloured glasses and a bit of caution.

Tubby: I was at Boulevard Mansion (or Mansion Boulevard, according to taxi drivers). I found out about it from this very thread. It was pretty cheap (~1300p per night) for a no-frills sort of room. I have some pictures of the room that I can post somewhere (not sure if I can on the forum or not). The main draw is that it's literally about 150 meters from LA Cafe, so if you're a lazy sack like me...
Oz: Well said. I, too, try to be careful, but I guess I just let my guard down this time. Live and learn; as Don5252 said, I'm glad I'm still alive, considering the alternatives...

how the hell could you let her get to your phone & your iPod ?
my phone, camera, & any other expensive electronic equipment is the first thing I check when they are leaving
unless there's an in-room safe which precludes the need to check
