Do you mean Swagman Hotel in Manila, or the one in Angeles? I have not stayed there for a while (either place). The one in Manila is in Ermita one block from Roxas Boulevard. Used to be close handy to the bars until Mayor Lim stepped in. You need a taxi to get to Edsa complex or P Burgos.

For what it's worth, the Swagman is a dumpy hotel and price / value is not good. The rooms are very old and not comfortable. It's relatively near the LA Cafe and few other bars but the area is not very safe so watch your back. Stay at the Executive Plaza Hotel for a better deal / room. It's also in the same area. I stayed at both last year so this is firsthand experience.

No problem, happy to help. Actually, I stayed there after reading a trip report from Colorado Guy who also mentioned the travel agency to contact this hotel through in his report. Not sure if it's in this thread or a different in this section but he had good details on this hotel....recommend reading his report...... http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=38&topic=3 Have fun but watch your back. Have been to many parts of the world and many "shady" areas but only ran into trouble once (in Manila) by some jerk bar owner who was drunk and just decided he didn't like me. Came up to me, told me to get the hell out of his bar, then punched me in the nose as I was trying to leave....a tiny, crappy Gogo bar pretty close to LA Cafe. I wasn't drunk and was minding my own business before this. That same night, I ran into a really nice guy who was almost robbed near the LA Cafe.....Keep your guard up at all times...

Executive Plaza hotel is 5 minutes walk from LA Cafe and is on the corner of Pedro Gil and Adriatico. It is a good 3 star hotel with in room safes.I stayed there in July,2006.Acting on Colorado Guy`s advice I booked through Action Travel which offered an internet rate of P1500.After repeated emails from me to confirm the rate Action Travel eventually advised that the rate was P1800 for a standard double. However,as this rate was lower than any other I could find I confirmed the booking.Action Travel`s website still advertises an internet rate of P1500.On 20 March I emailed Action Travel requesting a booking at Executive Plaza for July and asked what was their current rate.Despite 3 further emails I have had no reply.I then sought a booking through Beeline Travel which offers similar internet (too good to be true?) rates on its website, but after 1 month and 2 further emails I have had no reply. In the light of my experience Forum members might decide to look elsewhere.I certainly will.Asia Travel http://www.asiatravel.com/philippines.html might be a better choice. It offers internet rates of P2100 for a standard double at Executive Plaza, and P1900 for Palm Plaza a similar 3 star hotel 7 minutes walk from LA Cafe but without inroom safes on the corner of Pedro Gil and Mabini. I stayed at Palm Plaza 2 years ago and can recommend it.It is run by the same group as Executive Plaza, but is several years older and not quite as nice.Asia Travel offers an alternative rate of P2000 for Palm Plaza which allows you to pay on checking out rather than prepaying.

Mel,Agoda and Asia Travel seem to be pretty competitive in their rates. After allowing for the extra charges Agoda adds to its base rates Agoda`s rate for Executive Plaza is US$42,Asia Travel`s US$45,Agoda`s for Palm Plaza US$40,Asia Travel`s US$40.For Bayview Park 10 minutes walk from LA Cafe Agoda`s rate is US$56,Asia Travel`s US$50.So as always it pays to shop around. Thanks, I have added Agoda to my favourite`s list.

Valetta,, I did just a quick scan to try and get a better price. Personally I think hotels in such a horrible, polluted city with a failing economy are very VERY over-priced. There are some very nice places in the Phillipines but not Manilla. My opinions on the Filipina ladies have already been noted,, I suggest bring a Thai or Viet gal with you and get out of Manilla as fast as you can. Too each his own. Mel

Mel,overall I agree with the views you have expressed about Manilla and the Philippines.Ten years after the end of WW2 the Philippines ranked second after Japan in terms of average income. Now it ranks second last above Mianmar. The reasons for its decline are many.About 90% of the Philippine`s wealth is concentrated in as little as 5% of the population. This plutocracy avoids paying taxes, and is reluctant to invest its wealth in the Philippines.A relative lack of natural resources and a too rapidly increasingly population are also significant factors. However,Phiippinos recognise the importance of education in reducing poverty, and each year tens of thousands graduate from colleges and universities.Unfortunately they can`t find jobs because of the plutocracy`s failure to invest and are forced to seek employment overseas. Some 10 million Philippinos work overseas and without the money they remit to their families conditions for millions of Philippinos would be intolerable. In the light of all of this it is not surprising that Manila and much of the rest of the Philippines is less than pleasant, but the friendliness and determination of many Philippinos to solve their many problems (and the attractiveness of Philippinas) causes me to be a frequent visitor.

When I was reading the last post, it struck me that all you have to do is change every reference to 'the Philippines' into 'Thailand,' make the date something like five years in the future, and you have the perfect description of how yet another collection of smug, half-literate third world 'elites' are destroying one more country.
