Hey you HK pros... I may be moving there soon and am looking at places to stay.
Is it better to stay on the HK side, near shopping and whatnot, or over on the Kowloon side, near nightlife. My company recommended the former, and a guy I met while boozing the other night recommended the latter.
Don't want to be surrounded by bars, but also don't want to commute an hour to get to one. Right now I can walk 10min to Nana... so it may take a bit of getting used to either way. :D

at this moment, there is only one area I'd live in hk.
Discovery Bay. an oasis on lantau island.
if you wanna be near the action, try an apartment in lan kwai fong or upper wanchai. prices have come down truemendeously.
but I think you have to find out for yourself where you wanna live.

Thanks for the quick feedback... I heard that Discovery Bay is a family area... not really for us single bachelor types. No?
Will keep upper wanchai and lan kwai fong in mind.
Am going there to scout around... but am at the mercy of a realtor my company is supplying me with. Hard to tell her, 'ok... I want to be close to some freelancer action but prices gotta be below HK$1500 or better to fly back to thailand' heheh...
Or maybe I *am* in fact better to exile myself from the action and just save for my monthly trips back to Thailand.

Try the midlevels it is just a short cabride to the Wanch. Plus the world's longest escalator takes you all the way down to the Fong. Great city views possible without breaking the bank.
However, if you wanna try something unusual: my favourite place in all of hongkong is stanley village. very unlike the rest of hongkong and a great drive to and from the city. Got a really nice european cafe culture vibe, in parts, quite removed from the crazines of hongkong.

oh yes, db is also nicknamed delivery bay. but there are no cars, a great big plaza and very nice western style apartments.
just google under "siena discovery bay"
of single guys and gals!! freebies, too.
not as far as stanley (but I agree with mr. holmes it is a nice area at the beach and old government house is full of nice cafes and eateries),
db is about 35 minutes from the wanch. you have to take a boat mostly... bu they also have bus services to and from TST nowadays.
where will your office be located??
btw. I have lived in: mid levels, heng fa chuen, kowloon tong, yuen long, tsim sha tsui and wan chai and db myself.
db is the best.

As long as you live close to the subway. anywhere you go between Hong Kong and Kowloon is less than 30 mins. Cheung Sha Wan is close to Mong kok where you can find all the action. just look for thre yellow sign and price range $350 to $400 for 45 mins all inclusive.
Most of the girls are main land and Chinese, thai, Malysian and Vietnamese. Russian also available. Russian's price is higher around $100us.

Stayed in Midlevels for a year and half, 10 mins or less gets you down town in aa AC cab. The escalator is fun and there's a few bars that you can nip into to break the journey, but take care it changes direction mid morning from down to up. It's a hell of a hike if you get it wrong.
Had freinds staying up around happy Valley again 5-10 mins in a cab to WanChai and its bars, girlie bars and discos. I found the nightlife better on HK side mostly hit it at the w/e as I worked at night, Strawberrys was good for a 6am beer and 'take away'.
Dont worry about the agents they have seen it all, I ended up on a few dates with my agent well she did work for Hookers!!!!

Just came back from HK. Stayed at the Empire Hotel (on corner of Fenwick and Hennesy Rd). HK $600 per night (first night HK $1,000 though). Broadband internet access (MagicNet) HK$100 per day or HK$35 per hour (if you just need 1 hour's worth). I was with GF, so can't really comment on GFness, but by the looks of it, they don't really care. No security checks, just walk in and out as we please. This place is in the heart of the action, so Fenwick, Neptune, Joe Bananas, Boracay, Laguna, are just a stones throw away.
rtb, which Neptune did you go to? I walked into Neptune 2, and it was full of Thais and prolly some Filipinas too. Reminds me of Thermae. In fact, I recognized a couple of them, one of them was from Beer Garden. The door guy show me the cover charges, $50 for lady's, $100 for armed forces and $300 for non-members, for entry and one drink. Somehow, I got the armed forces' price. That's damn expensive!
I left my TGF in town, while I checked out Shenzhen, apparently she bumped into the Cambodian girl (the one that hangs out at GT and Spasso) in some bar.
