In this thread will be a FR I wrote about taking Dew to Hong Kong earlier this year. Just getting around to posting it. This first part is what I wrote before the trip. I'll add the FR of each day of the trip over the course of a week or so. --------------- In a few weeks, I will be in Hong Kong for biz for a couple of days. From there, my plan was to return to Bangkok and have a few days off before working. However, Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities and is very fun; it would be nice to hang there for a few days. After reading the FRs here and elsewhere about the "girl situation", I thought "why not fly a TG over to meet me in HK?" Thought about asking Dew and then thought about how I would have her go on my terms (i.e. flying alone, having to pass through immigration alone, getting her passport, etc.) So I used a little reverse psychology (or whatever it is called) when I called Dew: CG: "sorry sweetie, I will be having my holiday in Hong Kong and cannot come to BKK to see you" Dew: "you have new girlfriend in Hong Kong?" CG: "Ladies from China are very beautiful, what do you think?" Dew: "Yes, for sure you have lady Hong Kong". CG: "No, not yet (she didn't catch that). But I haven't been to Hong Kong for a long time, and it is so beautiful and I want to have my holiday there" Dew: "Hong Kong? Beautiful? Jing Law? You go before?" CG: "Jing jing, I go many times, you should go to see Hong Kong sometime" Dew: "oooohhhhh, I want to go. Maybe I have holiday Hong Kong same time as you. You can show me everything Hong Kong." CG: "You cannot go because if you go you have to fly alone" Dew: "Why?" CG: "You have to fly alone to Hong Kong, because I will already be there." Dew: "Never mind, I can fly alone and see you in airport Hong Kong." CG: "Hong Kong 2 hours and a half. Long way! Can?" Dew: Dai! Mai bpen rai! I can look movie, sleep, eat, look movie, sleep, eat, look movie, sleep, eat. Same as you when you come Thailand" CG: "Hong Kong now mahk (very cold), maybe you will not like it" Dew: Mai phen rai, I can do, no problem, I buy big jacket" CG: "You have passport?" Dew: "No, but you can you bring me to get? CG: "You have to make passport for yourself, I already have passport for me. 1000 baht - Can?" Dew: "Dai, dai, you can show me where to make passport?" CG: "Yes, OK. I can show you where, no problem. But what about ticket for airplane, you can pay?" Dew: "If you want me to pay, I can pay, up to you." (I have a vision of her now batting her eyelashes) CG: "OK, next week I will show you where to make a passport, and I can see you in Hong Kong" Dew: "Tilac, thank you for let me go see you holiday Hong Kong!" See how easy it is to make a woman think it is HER idea! Dew is just finishing her last PADI Open Water Scuba certification (very un-Thai-like, huh?), so I'll get her passport and ticket to Hong Kong as a present for that. Just a little over one year ago, this girl hardly spoke English, had never been on an airplane, and was scared of putting her face under water. What have I done to her!?!

CG, You are the man! You crack me up. I need to try that psychology on a few girls next time. By the way, how much is airfare from BKK to HK? Also all the girls need is a passport for entry to HK? No visa needed? Have fun.

horntoad, the round-trip airfare can be as low as US$200 and up. The best thing to do is to inquire at BKK travel agents, there are deals to be had. Air Asia flies BKK to Macau as well. A visa is not necessary for Thai nationals to enter Hong Kong, only a passport. I have heard stories that single Thai women traveling alone *may* be questioned as to their holiday plans.

Yes, should be fun to hear the CG version of TG in HKG. Over the years Oldtimer has taken two pair of TGs there, but his writing skills are not up to CG's. I bet though that Oldtimer's TG's comments will not be dissimilar from Khun Dew's.

Day 1 ------------------------------------------ I gave Dew a round-trip ticket to Hong Kong on Thai Airways, and told her I would wait for her there (I was already going to be there prior). I have two nights and two and a half days in Hong Kong with her, we fly back to Bangkok in two days at 8:30pm, then I’ll say bye to her for this trip. Three weeks ago, I took her to the passport office at Pinklao (on the way home from Kanchanaburi) and paid for her passport (about 1000 baht). Her arrival day, I go to the Kowloon Airport Express station and buy a RT ticket to HK airport (HK$90 - 450 baht - same price as a one-way). An idea pops into my mind – why not find someone who is going one-way and ask him to buy a RT ticket, give him some cash to pocket, then use his return for Dew. Save both of us money. I approach a Japanese guy and say I’ll give him HK$30 if he buys a RT and lets me use the return portion. This guy speaks no English but he seems to understand and all goes well. BTW, HK$1 = about 5 baht I wait for Dew in the arrival hall at Hong Kong airport. When I last saw her in Bangkok, I had given her about HK$900 just in case, as well as a note from me to show to Hong Kong immigration if asked. The note said I would be waiting for her, we would be flying back to Thailand together and if there were any questions, they could call me. Soon, Dew comes walking out as relaxed as could be. She tells me the HK immigration official asked “You speak English?” Dew answered “no” and gave him my note, the official read it and gave it back to her with no questions. She was later than most of the rest of the flight because she had to use the toilet and then the immigration line got long. Oh, the toilet: Dew: I run for the plane and sit down, then I cannot go to the toilet for 2 hours! CG: You can go to the toilet on the plane, no problem. Dew: No, cannot, I sit by window. Two people sit next to me, they not speak Thai, so I cannot ask them to move so I can go toilet. CG: You can ask them to move in English, or just get up and they will move. Dew: No, cannot. Dew tells me she was questioned at Bangkok Airport for 20 minutes, with questions like: “Who pay for your passport?” “Why you want to go Hong Kong? “Where you going to work Hong Kong?” “Where you work Thailand?” “Who is your boyfriend?” “What does he do?” “How long you know him?” “Maybe Hong Kong you can find work, do you want?” “Who do you know in Hong Kong?”, etc. She almost missed her flight, heard her name being paged and she she finally told the immigration agent “Sorry, I have to go now because they call my name and I have to go Hong Kong.” The agent then stamped her passport. (Obviously, this is all from what she told me happened, I was not there.) Someone told me that the often challenge people with new passports leaving Thailand for the first time. Maybe even looking for a bribe. On the Airport Express train, Dew is wide-eyed at the towering condos and mountains along the way. At one point, the train goes into the tunnel through the mountain; Dew says “What happened? This skytrain or subway” Well, both I guess. On the train, Dew gives me back the HK$900 I gave her, I tell her to keep it for now, just in case. She also gives me 1000 baht. CG: Why do you give me 1000 baht? Dew: When I get passport, you pay 1000 baht because I not have. Now I have 1000 baht, so I give back to you. CG: Thank you, but it is OK, you do not have to give me 1000 baht. Dew: Yes, but listen to me, it is my passport, not your passport. So it is my 1000 baht, not your 1000 baht. Little things like this, for some reason, impress me about Dew. Same same in the past when she is hungry and wants room service, she says “You want to eat?” If I do not eat with her or I am not there, she pays the server for the food out of her money. She says “CG if we eat together, you can pay. If I eat alone, I pay. My food, I pay. Our food, you pay.” Very un-Thai-girl-like, huh? First stop before the hotel, see some of my friends play rugby in Hong Kong. We taxi from the Airport Express station uphill to King Park where my friends are playing. Dew sits and listens to my.mp3 player and watches the game, doesn’t seem to be bored. Game finished, a couple of beers with the guys and Dew says “Why I come to Hong Kong and only see people Amereka? I want to see people Hong Kong?” OK, walk 4 blocks downhill to the hotel. I was in Hong Kong before Dew came over from Bangkok, but nice hotels are very, very expensive here when not booked far in advance. Before she got here, I checked out three "more economical" accommodations (i.e. guesthouses). Two are complete ratholes, but the third one is in a building called New Lucky House. Spotlessly clean, friendly staff, great location at Nathan Rd and Jordan Rd. Pretty bare bones room but HK$300/night (1500 baht). Dew has no complaints about the place. “CG, it’s OK, we live here 2 days only, not 2 years.” Dew could care less where she stays - a guesthouse or a suite at the Peninsula Hotel are same same to her. I let Dew call her mom from my phone (HK mobile rates have got to be the cheapest I have seen anywhere outside Amereka). She seems quite proud to be calling from Hong Kong. She had not told her mother she was going to Hong Kong until one hour before she left her village on the bus to go to Bangkok. Why? Dew says “If I tell my Mom before I go, she not want me to go and ask me many questions. Better I tell her just before I go, then she cannot think too much.” Her aunt asked if “CG was taking Dew to Hong Kong to sell her?” Not sure if this was asked in jest. She doesn’t ask me to let her call her Thai boyfriend/husband (not sure which she has, but a cute, smart girl like this surely has one or the other). I had checked-in to the guesthouse earlier today, so we both shower and have a nice “Welcome to Hong Kong” screw. We take the subway to Central and walk to Lan Kwai Fong and wait to meet up with Dinkum91. The whole time, Dew is taking pictures of almost everything and is quite wide-eyed at the scenery of skyscrapers and mountains. “CG, why they make building on the mountain?” Good question! LOL Dinkum91 comes along, we hit two bars for happy hour (about HK$30 for a beer – 150 baht). I say “pang mahk” and Dew says “not expensive, no problem because I not pay!” Throughout the trip, every time I take a price of something and say the baht equivalent - like “HK$30 is 150 baht”, Dew says “no, you can believe 30 baht, then not expensive.” Stupid, huh? Maybe not. Lan Kwai Fong is a great area, lots of expats and lots of bars, some cute office girls running around here too. Dew and Dinkum91 seem to get along just fine, I know Dew likes him because she said "you come Bangkok, you can call me every time when CG in Amereka". Happy hour finished, Dew is drunk (in which state she is far too talkative and animated). Remember, she is only about 45 kilos so it doesn’t take much 5.5% alcohol beer to get her drunk. We move to Temple Street night market near our hotel. On the ride on the subway and while walking, Dew stays quite close to us. In Bangkok, she is much less “clingy” but I think in Hong Kong she has a fear of getting lost especially when there are no signs in her language and she has never been here. Natural, I guess. (The whole trip, there was hardly a time when she was more than 5 feet away from me.) We pick out a place on the street and order some food and drink, Great food (but we have to keep asking them repeatedly to bring things we ordered), inexpensive, good people watching, lots of hot chicks, Dinkum91 teaches us both some words of Chinese. Good fun. Dinkum91 takes off and Dew and I walk through the market for about 10 minutes, nothing jumps out at either of us to buy, so we walk back to our hotel, shower and both promptly fall asleep. Welcome to Hong Kong! I’ll write more in a day or two, tomorrow, the bus to Stanley and maybe The Peak.

Great read CG. And I will add with sincerity..a very good thing you have done mate. Taking a girl from LOS to HK for a couple of days holiday...a memory Dew will never forget. Also you caught up with the HK tour guide Dinkum91, another nice bloke from OZ. One thing that Dew said that I have heard many many times before, "Dew: Yes, but listen to me", sounds familiar to some people lol. Keep it coming. Barrafish.

Nice FR CG. barrafish must second that. The ladies working in Thailand would be a lot better off (not just talking about money) if there were more CG's around.
Just a little over one year ago, this girl hardly spoke English, had never been on an airplane, and was scared of putting her face under water. What have I done to her!?!
Maybe given her something she never dreamed she would experience?
Dew is just finishing her last PADI Open Water Scuba certification (very un-Thai-like, huh?), so I'll get her passport and ticket to Hong Kong as a present for that.
Dew must have had a great time checking out HK for the first time So Dinkum91 if I ever want to visit HK should I take a girl with me or can you point me in the right direction to find some fun without taking a girl with me How many girls in Thailand have a passport that I might pick up in a go-go or other such place? Not that HK is high on my list but I have considered it. Cheers

Bimmher, that's actually a good question and I guess it depends on your good self. I think a lot of the enjoyment CG got out of his trip was seeing how much Dew enjoyed herself. I think it's great seeing a place you know through the eyes of someone else. And if you want your own girl with you for the holiday then, yes, bring one with you. Having said that, no problem having some fun with the available talent here at various places.
