I am a budget traveller and intend to take the budget Air Asia from Malaysia to Macau one of these days.
Can anybody recommend a budget hotel/hostel with room rates below US $ 45 per night ?

Having just returned from Macau and having stayed at the East Asia I can give it a recommendation. I paid 300 MOP a night there. The room wasn't big or new but the bed was fine, and the a/c worked well.
I also stayed at the Florida which pretty much sucked but during the week was 250 MOP a night. Bad beds, pillow and a/c there.
If you read a guide book it will mention the mainland prostitutes that work these two places. That doesn't go on anymore.
There are several places on Rue de Felicidade that will fall in your price range, but I didn't look at any of those.
I did bang a chick at the London Hotel. The room was between the Florida and East Asia in quality, and the price is around 300 MOP, but you have the added attraction of an unlimited supply of PRC prositutes working there.
All of these places are in the inner harbour area, which once sort of had a seedy feel but now is becoming a bit more touristy.
Another option might be to stay in a Sauna. I visited the Boss Sauna a couple times over there and they will let you stay for up to 24 hours. You don't have to bang a chick either, you can pay 298 MOP or something like that for use of the sauna, food and drinks, and they will let you sleep there. I was going to do this on the day I left as my flight left at 7:30P but ended up paying a half day at the East Asia, 150 MOP. By the way if you visit the Boss Sauna pick #308, a 21 year old vietnamese lady, the single best paid sex experience of my life, and for only 788 MOP.

I think it is about 7.8 to 1USD. Its always just a percent or two less than the HK dollar.
