I thought this would bring a different perspective to "CG and Dew do Hong Kong".

A TG that I have known for quite some time wanted to go somewhere, so that she could show a stamp in her passport (and probably brag to her friends). Eventually I decided on a 3 day 2 night Hong Kong trip.

We booked Thai airways to HK. Big mistake. Flying Thai airways from Bangkok is like going to a zoo where all the animals have been let out of their cages. Reservation areas 3 and 4 were Thai airways. About 1/2 of the counters were open, with no lines marked whatsoever. The falangs had to establish the lines. Thais continually tried to cut in line. I just ordered (polite didn't do it) about 3 of them to the back of the line - they went after looking at me and the other falangs in line. I noticed that they just cut in line right after the last falang that noticed them, but that was not my problem.

Finally we get on the airplane, which closed its doors and then sat at the gate for 1 hour with no notifications at all. At this point, even the TG said "never fly Thai again - fly Bangkok Air". Others in the plane laughed.

Rest of the flight was fine. They even served a meal on the 2 1/2 hour flight. Amazing. But, in what became a harbinger of the future, my TG said the food was terrible and wouldn't eat it. And, this was Thai airways serving Thai food as an option.

The plane landed and our transfer to the hotel was smooth, although the TG wanted to know why the airport was so far away. I explained that this was the "new" airport and that land was too valuable near HK for an airport (as good of an explaination as any).

We stayed in Kowloon right off Nathan Road. After an easy checkin, shower, and change of clothes, I took her out to walk the "Golden Mile" of Nathan road and get onto the Star Ferry, which I think at night is one of the great views in the world for less than $0.50 USA.

She complained about walking. She didn't like the boat. Why we do this? she asked. Oh, oh. And, it was too hot and humid (and HK was the same temp as BKK, although the humidity was greater).

We get to HK island. What we do now, tilac? I guess we had better eat, since you didn't eat anything on the plane. I found a Cantonese Chinese place that served roasted pork, a vegetable soup, and udon noodles. She didn't like the soup or noodles, but ate most of the pork. It was the best meal that she ended up having in HK.

We took the ferry back and walked back to the hotel. "I no want to walk more" she said. She also looked at the shops. "Too expensive", she said, and I agree - you no longer go to HK for shopping.

The next day I booked an afternoon/evening tour of Aberdeen Harbor, some shopping areas, and dinner at "Jumbo's" floating restaurant, since I knew she didn't want to walk any more.

On the tour she kept trying to figure out why we were doing this. Don't you want to see some of HK? I asked. "I think so, but I don't like - when we go back to Bangkok", was her reply.

Once again, the shopping was too expensive and the food unappealing to her. I think she ate 3 of the 8 courses at Jumbo's. And, the weather was too hot and humid.

The morning of the last day I booked a trip to Victoria Peak. (I could have done this on my own with a subway ride to Central and walking 4 blocks to the tram - but I knew she wouldn't walk anywhere.) Once again she didn't understand why we would go to the top of a mountain.

With great relief I got us back to the airport and onto the plane. Everything was smooth back to Bangkok.

Remember, I've known this TG (or so I thought) for a long time. To summarize:

1) She didn't like the food;
2) She didn't like the weather;
3) She didn't understand or appreciate the concept of site seeing;
4) She didn't want to walk anywhere;
5) She didn't like the boat (Star Ferry) ;
6) The shopping was too expensive for her (even though I offered to pay) ;

But, she did call many of her friends to tell them about her trip to Hong Kong. Go figure.

YMMV. For me, I will think long and hard before taking another Thai girl outside of her own country.

Good story RIT. I took my ex-GF in Hong Kong a couple of years back, and she simply enjoyed herself. She loves Chinese food, at least she knows that Thai food isn't the only food in this world. Nightlife there was great, though it was mighty expensive, heck who cares. We flew Dragon air which was a lot cheaper than Thai airways. As for shopping, I gave her a few thousand dollars HK to go shop, while me and my boss when elsewhere to play. She had to buy another suitcases to carry her stuff back! Damn! If it's not her money, she will definitely spend it. Oh yeah, summer is not the best time to visit Hong Kong, just bloody hot and humid.

It's too bad she had a bad time, if someone can't enjoy Hong Kong... not sure what else to say.

The two TGs I took out of the country (Dew to Hong Kong and Snow to Vietnam) were great trips for me and for the girl as well. But they are neither lazy nor unambitious to see new things, which is why they enjoyed these places.

Bring a different girl next time, you might have a blast!

CG - I will certainly do that! I've been to HK many times and enjoyed each trip until this one. Glad we were able to meet at least one time while I was in BKK.

My wife and I have been several places in the U.S. including Washington, D.C. and a tour of the White House grounds. While I thought she might be impressed with Washington she was more impressed with the landscaping. Same same for the trip to the Biltmore House in N.C.. She still had a great time and never complained even though we walked several miles both times. So as CG pointed out they are not all alike. TG was even pregnant at the time. That's an excuse for any woman to bitch.

Cheers,

LS

Good Doctor. What's up with the typos? Maybe one too many tours at night. Not getting enough rest? I noticed in another posting about needing a fireplace in Thailand that you typed:

It's the romantic guy on me. I assume you meant "in" me but I guess both could be equally bad.
