The Marquis de Sade was a madman, a crazed sadistic fool who committed kidnapping, rape, slavery and pedophilia, among many other crimes, not including murder. I knew the basics about him and once tried to read one of his books, from the locked stacks in university library. Well I must say that seajohn is a more determined reader than me. I was really bored by Sade's endless pornographic fantasies, the product of a really sick mind.
This thread got me curious, so I surfed a little and found an account of Sade's life on crimelibrary.com that includes how he first got in serious trouble with the law:

Yes, Sade was insane, but when he got into trouble, and in jail, it was much more by symbolically breaking the taboos of his time than by causing actual bodily harm to anybody. And some of his books are much more than just pornography.
