On my last visit there, I was told by my lady friend that three of the women there had 'sponsors' and were no longer serving customers. They came to the bar to be with old friends, not to work. Perhaps the lady was one of those.

most of the better bars require their girls to get tested for stds and aids aids once every one or two months but Still wear a condom do not trust any tests they may or may not have had.
I hang around bargirls way to much, but I do enjoy the company.

It may be the view-point taken by a lot of tourists and punters with Western attitudes to P4P that a bj bar girl is at rock bottom, but it is certainly not seen as that here in South-East Asia.
All wound up with class, social status, face, honour
and righteous living, a person who is employed doing
an honest day's ( or night's ) work,
whether it be at the Palace, an office, a mall
or as a bj bar girl are viewed as being far way and above the unemployed and if you talk with a lot of your bar-girl friends, they'll tell you that a freelancer ( presumably self-employed in our book) who is unaccountable, answers to no-one, has no real working colleagues and who only works when she wants to or has to, is seen as the lowest of the low.
The myth that the freelancer is a rip-off artist, a thief, a cheat and a liar re-enforces this view and helps in despising others 'less fortunate than' bar-girls.
Even if a girl works out of a bar, but still retains her freelancer options by not being paid by the bar, she still seen as having "a place of employment" and so is an enormous cut above the rest.
As for bj bar girls being way past their prime, you may be thinking only of Wild Country which instantly gives you that impression, although over time, I have seen one or two youngish girls working there for a little while before moving on.
As for other bj bars, I have seen quite a few girls who are in their prime and one or two juicy peaches ripening there.
Some bj bars are not as popular as others.
The not-so-popular bj girls in a busy bar, might only have 4 customers a day but if each one is 300 baht to her, it's still an income of 36,000 baht per month and that's without any drinks commission or tips and way, way above anything that she could earn on the farm or in a factory as unskilled or skilled labour.
For the more popular bj bar girls, if they are given 500 baht by the bar for each blow as their cut, and they have 10 customers a day, that is 150,000 baht per month before drinks commission and tips.
Now we can see why the 'high season", when it comes, is so looked forward to.
Of course Wild Country is usually starved of customers, its doors only being opened by the brave and so those few bands of brothers find themselves in the middle of a scrum of bj girls wanting to be the first one to blow them, that is either during or after they have been milked of the price of a number of lady drinks.
As for the mental problems, alcoholism or a history of stds and even AIDS, maybe that description might be reserved, if used at all, for a minority of some of their customers that they have to put up with.
And I'm not saying that these things cannot be found in beer bars, go-go bars, massage parlours and so-called high-class entertainment establishments.
But then, these are only my observations.

BJ bar girls are not viewed as rock bottom by people in SE Asia? Seriously?
Take a girl from SoL to a company function and introduce her to people, explaining what she does for a living. Take an unemployed girl along to one. Do you seriously believe that the SoL girl will be viewed as being "far and away above the unemployed"? I am not saying it is right that she will be looked down on, but it is a fact.
Freelancers are seen as the lowest of the low? Maybe the junkies who work Suk Soi 3-5 at 11.00 in the morning, but what about the freelancers who work the 'higher end' discos, who can easily get Bt 5,000+ for one night and reel in some rich guy from overseas? What about the girls who work the internet? Are they really viewed as lower than a girl employed in a bar or gogo who has to be there for a set number of hours every day, hustling for drinks and barfines and subject to all sorts of rules? I bet that the majority of those freelancers earn a lot more than the average girl from a bar/gogo and doesn't have to f*** nearly as many punters. I would suggest that the freelancers view gogo girls as below them for having to go to work every night and generally having a lot less choice over who they go with etc.
I agree that BJ bar girls are not all over the hill old hags and that decent looking ones do exist.
I would also suggest that very few BJ bar girls, if any, get 10 customers a day, every day. I also doubt that the not so popular girls, even in busy bars, get 4 customers a day, every day.
