Crackdowns in shanghai have been happening every2 or 3 weeks for the last 3 years, ever since the 2 am closing time for bars came in the cops have been prowling the main areas such as mao ming lu and zhulu Lu, if you're white u won't have a problem, even with 2 girls hanging off you walking down the road, they can't and won't bother trying to prove u were about to screw them. the girls are the only one's at risk from the authorities, unless u get caught in the act, some 5 star hotels are strict and won't even let u bring a girl into your room, i've never experienced this tho since i have an apartment in shanghai.
as far as aids goes, yeah its a problem, but name a place where it isnt a problem?? if u want to sleep with prostitues without a condom then its your own choice and hence u put your self at risk, no need to kick a dead horse on that subject :P

First, crackdowns are continuous for 2 to 3 months depending on what the cops are directing their action to, ie sex, or drugs, or whatever.
Any real crackdown in the bar trade, always involves expat hangouts and disrupting the flow of that commerce.
Passports are checked, anything not in order results in more difficulty and fines.
On the issue of aids, your dreaming. Why?
Becasue in places like Thailand, there is a wide awareness in the P4P industry about AIDS.
In China there is virtually no public awareness and until recently, only some government acknowledgement of the problem in China.
You can still see posters about the 'perils' of SARS, but I have never seen any public posting about the dangers of AIDS.
Sure your rocket can be fairly safe in a rubber raincoat, but, the percentage of contacts increases the chances of transmission. And add on the blind approach to other STDS, and its a hell of a soup.
By the way, there is nothing even half as good as Bumrungrad Hospital in Shanghai. A couple of Western style clinics are available, but at $90.00usd for only a 45 minute consultation you can imagine how costs escalates.
Anyway, just my opinion.
Mr. mm3............8.3 rmb per $1.00 U.S. The girls costs are relative. When I indulge, I go 300rmb to 500rmb tops, but generally stay away from P4P regulars and Shanghai pros.
I will not compete with the Shanghai Chinese big rollers.
And they pay for the hangers on, the booze, the luxury KTV rooms, the hotel rooms, and tons of food, and all that is before they start banging the broads.
At some parties, I've seen the girls get themselves well drunk before they 'give in'. So basically the dudes are f***ing a drunk. By the way these are not 'young peoples' or good 'ole boys parties.
These are party parties.
I prefer girls who are breaking into the P4P business, they are more natural, fun and less likely to be carrying (bugs). But they have to be special, ie. 3-way positive.
Mostly, though, a guy who lives here generally does not have to pay at all, but sometimes it's just less complicated.

how are ya mate? It seems we both have had quite different experiences in shanghai as far as p4p, crackdowns and the likes go. I was on mao ming lu inside judies too when a 'raid' occured, first the cops kicked down the kebab guy's grill out the front, then they came in and had everyone taken out of the bar... that was all they did, we just walked down the road, got into a cab and went to zhu lu lu.
I'm not saying different raids could occur, obviously i havent witnessed every one of these events.
I think we should spend more time agreeing that there is not just 1 way things happen in Shanghai, and at times we can both be right

Mr Metaliclink........as you know in China the laws and the enforcement of those laws are relative to the person charged with doing the enforcing.
However, since this forum is about various experiences that others can learn from, its good to post various differences in experience that guys have in all P4P locations around the world.
It is in the interpretation of the experiences that we differ. Some interpretations hold more value than others.
What you fail to say is why the raid occurred. Raids occur for different reasons.
The one you describe might have been a 'shakedown' raid where the police are showing off their power for a kickback.
The raid might have been for tax reasons, or licence verification, or for fire regulations, or even as an exercise for rookies.
Or to check the liquor served is not illegally imported, or simply as a reminder that the police are 'on the job'.
The raid may affect foreigners when its a drug raid , or a hooker raid. Then you come under questioning, pasport review etc, similar to what they do in English schools from time to time.
The authorities do not have the flexibility of Western enforcement which means that the raid is for one purpose and one purpose only that night. They will come another time for something else.
The fact that you walked out of the club and got into a taxi means nothing except that on that night your 'raid' did not invlove anything to do with you.
And you may not be told why the raid occurs. They may say to you, "well this raid is to ensure the safety of foreigners in our local bars", when it fact it has only to do with selling contraband liquor.
I will not provide on this forum how I come to understand
these situations.
Certainly I do not mind if you disagree with me, however I still must present my knowledge as I understand it.
It is not a question of members of this forum needing to both be right at times, that's a given, but for me it is a question of being well informed of all the possiblities.
Spending more time agreeing as you suggest, to me, is really a waste of time. Informing members of what I really know and understand, I feel, is a better use of my time, and makes a better read for the members.

hehe, now i am curious as to how u have gained your understanding of these situations!
I'm just curious as to why, in my 6 years in shanghai, which included going out to either mao ming lu, nan jing lu, or the dearly missed Tequilla mama's on Rui Jing Er lu most every weekend, i only witnessed this one 'raid' and a good friend of mine's boyfriend works in Buddha bar and has done so for a few years now and he has also only witnessed one 'raid' but maybe they happen in the more shady areas of shanghai more often?
Either way its all good, it'll always happen to some extent, as u say, if not for any real purpose, then just for the cops to show their power.
btw, i just decided i'm going to transfer to shanghai to finish off the remainder of my business course so i'm pretty excited! and i'll then be able to report with more recent news on this and other matters mostly good ones i hope!

You see that is what I am confused about. First you say there are raids.....then you infer there are no raids.
What ever my sources, they are authoritative, and not a friend of a friend who works in a bar.
If I were you, I would focus on my studies and not the P4P scene.

"crackdowns" and "raids" are different things in my opinion, and i therefore have not contradicted myself nor have i proven that u know any more about shanghai than I. I know u like to disagree with everything i post and think i know absolutely nothing about Shanghai but i frankly dont give a shit.
crackdowns have been happening every 2 or 3 weeks since the 2 oclock closing time. those crackdowns i was referring to were about the closing time, they were also for drugs and prostitution, but they were hardly raids.
All they were was a few cops walking up and down mao ming lu trying to look important.
I dunno what you u get out of trying to prove me wrong and make me look like a dick head, i love shanghai, i enjoy the nightlife in shanghai and have never ever had a problem with it as far as cops go or anything like that, i've never gotten aids from a girl in china or any other disease or any negative side effect.
I've had a few drinks so i might be taking what u said more to heart but just live and let live man... actually i kidna get soem entertainment out of reading your replies and writing back to them, keep it up mate

Yes they are. My meaning for crackdown (now called 'strike hard campaign' by the press) is a 2 to 3 month continuous program directed at one specific crime.
A 'raid' is one action that takes place against one location, as paet of the 'strike hard' campaign.
So you see we are already mixed up in what we both mean so lets drop it and remain positive.
And when someone details what they know, it does not necessarily mean that they are trying to prove you wrong.
"i frankly dont give a shit."......Sure you do and that's cool.
I know you do because you keep posting, so lets stay positive and keep ourselves entertained at least.
