Gentlemen,
last week I stayed in Shanghai and as you read in this forum and also on other pages it seems to be a bad place for pickups because of controls and security in the hotels.
But still interested thoug. 
We went to Hardrock Cafe as first address but it was pretty dead, only white guys and many beers around.
Afterwards went to the Luna Bar, address Xin Tian Di road (Chinese: Unicode letters U+65B0, U+5929, U+5730) taxi stops at a street and you have to enter a walking zone with many many pubs, Starbucks, etc. Luna Bar is in the middle of the walking zone. Went inside and immediatelly ran into two freelancers. Live band, etc., somehow comparable to the Hardrock Cafe in BKK, but less girls. Still many. Btw, it was a Wednesday.
They have been very straight forward, after one red wine for them they talked about massage etc. But our "married guys" to "freelancer girls" ratio was too unbalanced to arrange something. Tried to get a phone number or something but they declined. Think they are worried about getting foreign calls - makes sense.
So later went off. But these girls are really the professional type of freelancer - after they noticed that we were not interested this night they turned around and got very close to some other guys. For me this was a big difference because in BKK they normally move some meters away before they start kissing other guys.  Never mind.
Next day (this time a better balanced team of hunters) again to Luna Bar, but only few girls. So no chance to do anything, but they had a really cool band playing till 2am in the morning. After lights off we asked a girl behind the bar about some place to go now and she wrote an address on a peace of paper - of course in Chinese. Got a taxi and showed the driver the address. Next day I found out that it was the Maoming South road (Maoming Nan Lu).
[Think it's important to get somewhere a Chinese spelling of this address before take-off...]
First bar, many guys, many many girls, after 10 or 15 minutes had a girl to dance with. She asked me to leave with her and we spoke about pricing before we got off - she wanted 1000 RMB or 100 US $ or 100 EUR (she does not read financial news, does she? . Agreed on 70 EUR but I think it would have been able to squeeze her down further but communication was difficult because of her poor English, ecspecially because she wasn't aware of the difference between EUR and US$ and "English money" (whatever she meant with that - think she did not talk about British Pounds).
[Advice: type in the amount in the mobile's display and show to her!!!]
But the interesting part is just starting: where to go? This is the big question when taking girls in Mainland China but she said she comes to my hotel "no problem". I was a little bit uncertain about that but she was right - arrived by cap (around 3.30 am), went in, guard did not say anything, no ID card, just straight forward to the elevators and into the room. Really no problem. Ah, you're interested where? Howard Johnson Hotel, 595 Jiu Jang Road.
Inside first taking shower, I forgot to mention, she agreed to stay 2 hours. Covered BJ, she brought her own condoms. Asked for money in advance. Action was a little bit too professional, for example with a faked moaning etc, but still ok. No undress under towel syndrome and light was on [ok, dimmed light]. She did not complain about it.
Afterwards she hurried to leave [2 hours not up so far] but it had no interest in more so no big deal. Strange - she asked me to bring her down to the street and stop a taxi, I think she did not want to walk through the lobby without me. So I brought her down, stopped a taxi and she left. But again no problems from the Hotel staff, I also wasn't charged for bringing her in.
Conclusion:
*) in Shanghai there are many places (the Maoming South is filled with such bars, at least 20, and even before we got into one many girls asked us about massage - on the street!)
*) it's possible to take the girls to the hotel, maybe it's necessary to wait till the night shift arrived
*) next day a Chinese guy gave me the hint to tell the Chinese girls that you work in Shanghai and stay for one month or something like that - service would be better than. Basically a good idea but I never thought about that before... in BKK you don't need such deep tricks to find a good service.
*) one important thing: on one day I walked along the famous walking zone Nan Jing East Lu, it was around 4 or 5 pm. And this is simply a street with shops and restaurants. But during my walk 3 or 4 girls came over and tried to get in contact. One even asked something like "so you have no friends here, are you lonely tonight?". I had no time to find out more (too bad), but I think there are many opportunities.
*) The girls themselves are a little bit older compared to girls in BKK, more end of 20. But you can find tall ones with a very slim body, nice shape. Mine was about 1.75 but absolute flat stomach, no stretchmarks and thin legs. [Many TGs are slim with slim legs and body but have a belly - urgl...]
For me it was just an experiment because I had no time and my stay was only a short one but with a little patience good results are achievable.

Nice report mate, I just have to say *ouch* about what you got charged. I hope she was super hot, because i've never even had a girl ask for more 600 rmb and yours wanted 1000 straight off! I guess she could smell the tourist in you  You can usually bargain pretty hard with the girls in shanghai, more so than my experience in BKk, but that could also be because I speak chinese but not Thai.
I've never paid over 500, and I think thats a ripoff still, but I was drunk and she was hot... 200 is usually tops for me. But u do get all kinds at Mao Ming Lu....
ALso The Hard Rock Cafe isn't quite so bad on friday/saturday nights, usually quite a few freelancers and normal girls looking for company. But its not a place I frequent.. WIndows too and mao ming are the best, so well doen in finding Mao Ming Lu at least

Right on the money Metaliclink. 200/300/400rmb for pros but still once in a while 600/1000 for supermodel types (or wanna be models).
Hard Rock? Even the burgers cost over 350/450 baht a shot.
Crap atmosphere.
ps. for the record about 5 baht per 1 rmb.

Yep, pricey, I know.
The stay (business trip) was far too short to get into the detail. I was just courious if possible - because many guys are saying "ah, forget about Shanghai". But it's not true, seems to be a good place. I think with a stay of one or two weeks many things are possible...
But why the heck are the taxi drivers always driving with opened windows? Bloody cold. *brrrr*

hehe yeah the hard rock isn't great, but they did have a really good aussie band! now its some fat old bugger, well last time I went anyway... that was months ago... its always best to hop across the road, and walk down nan jing lu until u get to windows too.... have u ever been there fastmover??
hehe PureMeat, I know whatcha mean about the taxi drivers, they have their heaters on and then the windows all half open... just tell them in sign language to close it until u get addicted to shanghai and start to learn the lingo
the place really does grow on you, i'm sure those guys that say 'forget about shanghai' have only spent a few days here and had no idea where to go or how to communicate. this place is only second to LOS in my eyes and heart.

Shanghai is ok, but obviously thailand is still the best!
I have just been to Mao ming lu, and yes, there are bars with chinese ladies....some of them are pretty, but they ask too much money in my opinion.
I have just taken one of them to my hotel room and...she first asked me 200 euros or 2,000 rmb. then I negotiated to 700 rmb, but I ended up paying 1,000 rmb (apprx. 5,000 bath)....I know this is a lot of money,,,but what can you do when you had a few drinks and you like the girl...anything goes!!!!
However, compared to thailand......this lady was pushy about to amount of money I would paid and she seemed angry when I wa trying to take it down. then we went back to my room..by the way, I did not have any problem with the hotel..no security and no questions...we just went up to room...easy!
Which hotel was that....the Sofitel Hyland!
then, she wanted to have sex....quickly...which is always bad...as it shows you that they want to get on with it quickly and go back to do more business.
however...no big problem...i liked her...very pretty chinese girl from beijing. she wouldn't give me a bbj unless I put my dick in her mouth...eventually she did it, but after a few minutes she said "OK....". same as, can we have sex now, so I can go?
This also happen in thailand, of course....but it does not make you feel good...does it?
anyway...it was a good f*** as she was very pretty and very nice tits.
Conclusions:
the ladies are a bit older then Bangkok (around the 30 years old), but pretty...
it is still better to save your money for thailand

OK brothers. So, I've got a new location to hunt in - Mao Ming Lu, next time I am in Shanghai.
Premeat, Stefano, what you paid is nothing compared to what I had to fork out. But that's a different story altogether.
In Xin Tian Di, as the taxi drops you off at the street, there is this first bar on the left hand side which had some FLs as well. They all wanted RMB 1000 but there were none that I liked.
The other place that you can go to for action (provided you are in a group of at least 3-4) are the nightclubs. There is plenty of choice, you can sit comfortably, drink and choose any kinda girl. Of course, it costs a fortune (see my FR - Shanghai Rocks !!!).
All said and done, Thailand is the BEST for our kinda activities.

555.. Chinese girls crack me up....
Was wlaking to Roppongi train station (tokyo) about 4:45am one winter morning. well oiled I was..
I was propostioned as by a not-so-bad 35ish year old chinese girl. Spoke a little english, but Japanses was perfect. I'm Ok in japanese. She wanted (equivelants here) $300US to go back to my hotel. I take security guard aside for some nice words which he accepts and all is good for admittance for my tryst. I turn around and all 3 have f***ed off.. obviously scared they will be arrested or something.. Just as well as I was rather out my head and just would have passed out probably and been robbed in process.. Who knows!!
I did end up with a Chinese girl here in Okinawa a while back.. She was nice-ish, but VERY inexperienced and mechanical. She bled all over the place. Had to let her go as she asked to many questions about my job!!
