CJ's right, there's a lot of hypocrisy in the current underage shakedown going on in Cambodia. But it IS happening, and they are trying to make examples. On my flight back to the States last week, I read yet another column (think it was the Bangkok Post) of a European who was busted for alleged underage hijinks in Cambodia. Didn't sound like the girl was really young, but it did sound like he was on the losing end of a police-brothel owner hustle. He was charged and deported.
Needless to say, going back to your own country filled with angry (in my case American) women does not help your case much once you hit the tarmac. Many of these Western countries are now prosecuting people coming home with these raps. Needless to say, the homeboys and girls seldom have a handle on the real state of affairs in SEA, so your chances for leniency in court of law on your home turf are pretty slim. Though the real intent here in the States seem to be a Christian crusade to stamp out sex and prostitution (consensual or otherwise), there is a legitimate concern about underage abuses, and they are playing that to the hilt. I remember, as I'm sure you do (though you probably heard about it from more direct sources) when that stuff was basically common knowledge. For that matter I can remember UN and UnoCOM (?) guys in bars I managed, telling me as much.

Excellent post. A well written and interesting analysis.
As far as the hypocrisy goes, it's here as well. Though the Thais have certainly tried to stop Falang (rightfully so) from pedophilic (kids) and ebophilic? (I can't remember what it's called but sex with post-pubescent teenagers while perhaps wrong and certainly illegal, is technically NOT pedophilia); plenty of Thai BigWigs are doin it.

The subject of underage sex is not one that I am comfortable with and normally do not post on these subjects
But something has come up here and i would like to get some opinions about it (but please no details)
If there are a few of you that want to post a reply please start another thread so that this one is not hijacked
OK the question
Before a came to Thailand the media of western countries give the impression that Thailand is overrun with Underage Girls. You get the idea that there are hordes of them and just by walking down the steet you will be approached by mothers wanting to sell their children for a few bucks
I have not seen any of this at all. The only children I see is the one selling flowers (and thats all)
Many old hands say that the business is alive and well but the farang are kept out of it.
Is this still true today. is there still a LARGE u/age business in Thailand or is it now small.
Please like i said no details of the "deed" but opinions about the size of the problem
I am talking about true U/age here not the grey area 17/18 year old

I'm with you,ive been here over 5 years and havnt seen anything remotly connected with this stuff.
Some of the brit newspapers make out Thailand to be some sort of haven for these people,to be honest it is worse around Kings cross in London.
My job keeps me in contact with the younger crowd,and just like in any other country they stick to there own agegroup.

Is there a large FARANG underage game at play?
I think not. There are the occasional sons of bitches but, Thailand is not so friendly any longer.
As to the Thai side, well, it's anyone's guess.
MOSTLY esp as far as farang go this is media hype.
And a lot has to do with girls who LOOK young, that is grist for the mill of the photo-journalists and cameramen for standup comics -- sorry I mean television on the air personalities in the news biz.
Some news crew flies in, ets up at the McDonalds on Silom, shoots a 3 minute sound byte about child prostitution while keeping the Patpong sign in the background, then wrap it and decamp across the street for some I & I.
Patpong of course has nothing to do with child prostitution, but they are only 3-4 hundred meters off the mark. Well maybe that little strip is dead now, I dunno, I don't go there. Sorry, I am not about to tell anyone where it was lest some pervert try to go trolling there.

Breifly: The only time I've seen Falangs engage in such filth openly was in Pattaya. There it was not uncommon to see old men with boys. (I do mean boys.)
I remember when I ( a libertarian who prefers to leave people to their own pleasures) was walking down the street and saw this Falang standing in the doorway talking to a young boy (with some sort of adult gaurdian standing by) while standing strangely close to the boy. When I saw the guy's hand reach for the boys crotch I found myself shouting (loudly) across the road "HEY!" - in broad daylight mind you- and when he turned, I gave him a look that just begged him to say something; He slunk away.
It's fairly open there, though less than before.

As for Thais, CJ is of course correct in saying that we don't know; but there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that it certainly goes on (the infamous pending case of the politician comes to mind) and I have been told by Thai child abuse activist/experts, in response to a specific question from me, that there are certainly more Thais engaing in these crimes in LOS than Falang (which BTW logically and statistically makes sense), and I have seen other experts qouted in publications as having the same veiw.
Aside from the Thai desire to minimize this for PR reasons (and as we know that in sexual matters the Thai government is even MORE sensitive about image than most; hard to believe, eh?) There is the need for international groups to gain international funding and political support: It is much harder to get people on your side, in this day and age, for missions of righteousness to tidy up other people's societies (went out with Imperialism and is not PC. Very un-fashionable!). But all the guilty liberals and godly conservatives are ready to vanquish the evil ones from their own community who exploit the downtrodden masses on foreign shores.
(Fair enough. It's one thing to have your homegrown human filth but to be taking in another country's scum as well...)

I agree mensasia.com is great website - (I am going to p.p. in jan - '03) if anyone knows good/great hotels currently can you let me know in a thread (and share with others). Haven't seen prevelant u/age sx/. in thi/bkk but have seen some young ones from time to time inadvertently - also seen the younger ones in the day time as much as the night.
