Howdy; Tryin to get my travel arrangments down. Does anyone know of airlines that operate into and out of Sieam Reap airport other than Bangkok Air? Bangkok Air will only go into Sieam Reap from Bangkok and back. I would like to go to Phuket after seeing the the Ankor Wat. Thanks

No direct flights Siem Reap-Phuket. But easy to catch a Thai domestic flight from Bangkok to Phuket, they operate all day hourly and are cheap (less than 3000 baht return I believe). Bangkok Air is a good small airline. You can do much worse out of Siem Reap!!!!

Two and Eight, no debate. Please, be REALLY careful when dealing with the girls there - it is quite common for the boyfriends to follow you and her home (and it isn't to watch you plug her). If you have local friends, so much the better - otherwise why don't you ask your hotel to give you a driver for the 2 days. He can usually get you where you want to be, and is a "buddy" if things start to go pear-shaped. As he is employed by the hotel, rather than picked up off the street, he is unlikely to mess you about. You might have to pay for his girl on those visits, but since you're taking the best one in the house and she's only five dollars, it won't break you. I'm not trying to be alarmist, nor spoil your fun - just be sensible, keep your eyes open, don't go out and get drunk by yourself in out of the way places and don't be the last non-local guy to leave the bar. I'm trying to recall the name of the best place in PP - its almost 100% locals, but a Thai mamasan - if you can wai her and sawadee krup, you're in. It is on a road leading up to the market, approx 100-150m away from the market, on the left. It's a club, with live music and you go up some broad stairs, then left through a glass door for a further level - the club floor is on your right, but you can't miss it. The mamasan will take care of you thereafter and you will have a big choice. This is much better than the one outside the so-called "Intercontinental", which is expensive, sounds like pussy, smells like fish and is in fact full of dogs and highly fraught with the hazards mentioned earlier. And the hotel is NOT part of the chain we all know worldwide. Another one to be careful in is (sorry for my memory) also the mis-spelled name of a famous global hotel chain - initial "S" (not the Sofitel, which is real) - you'll know it if you go there. Just that it is frequented by the PP Cosa Nostra; again - be sensible, and you are fine, but don't keep winking at the girl who's amongst 8 others cooing over a lazy, swarthy, but otherwise quite well-dressed local. He'll shoot you dead, and the papers will run the story of how you went crazy and attacked him. You can and should have a good time (I personally have had great times there, and if I can remember the names of the establishments, I'll post them later), but just keep in mind that what you want and what you want to avoid are very close together over there, much more overtly than LOS. Don't be rude, shout or get flashy with any cash you intend to spend yourself, when you're out at night/ anytime ever. You know I'm sure that when a disease affects 2% of the population it is officially classed as an epidemic. Some 3-5% of the Cambodian population have HIV/AIDS (dependent on whose stats you read). Run the numbers - this is pretty much 100% of those working in the sex trade. Don't let alcohol, high spirits, amour or any of your other emotionally charged instigators persuade you that it will be okay if you don't use a condom with someone you don't know. Nutshell; be sensible - get crazy in Bangkok. (apologies if this is preaching to the converted or a granny egg-sucking reu reaw session)

O.K. Back from Cambodia. Made travel arrangments with a BKK (Silom area) agent. The pick up at the hotel went well. Trinity Hotel in Silom area. Picked up several folks and traveled to the border. Stopped ouside of the border at a service station, Unfortunately, I did not have the pictures that you are suppose to have. Maybe I should have known this, but I didnt. Anyway, the lack of a picture for the visa was taken care of with 100B. Anyway, we went through the border fine. Well, then. the bus stopped about 1 Km in, and we were told to all (11 of us) to get into this supercab mini picku-up truck. Asked why.... was told. "The road is broken" O.k. so, I am told to get inside... their is A/C, but very very cramped. So after getting the hell knocked out of me on what the Cambodians call a road. We stop after about 25 Km, and I get in the back, and a Japanese guy gets inside where I was. So after many, many shitty KMs. We come to a long line of vehicles. After about a half hour of being told that we must wait. And seeing nothing happining. And hearing no vehicle engines running, I go forward to where the obstruction is. No one is moving, no one is doing anything. So, I tell the driver. Send a vehicle from Siem Reap to pick us up on the other side. He makes a telephone call, and tells me that his company does not have any vehicles to send to pick us up. Well unfortunately, I wait for another 3 hours, and still nothing going on. By now, it is very dark. Anyway, I grab my backpack, and start walking toward Siem Reap. Cross the obstacle in about 1 minute, and start walking down the black road. Another American joins me, and we walk for a bit. The road is so bad that I must keep my flashlight on or else risk twisting ankle or worse. Anyway, we see vehicles on the side of the road, and start to ask if any one would take us into S/R. After about 20 minutes, a truck comes and stops. It has 2 more of the people that I was traveling with in the back. They decided to leave as well, and one of the vehicles decided to give them a lift for 200B each, and they assured them that we would pay the same. WHich we did. By the time we get to S/R, it is about 130 am local time. Cant find the Guest House that I am scheduled to go to, so I stay at the Guest House the driver is staying at. ANyway, Visited S/R, saw all the temples... (They have temples like we have 7/11s). Went to Phnom Pehn. Recommend not taking the road in from Thailand. Fly into either P/P or S/R. And then fly out again. Take the fast boat to/from from P/P & S/R. Tours are not worth it. Pay as you go. If you want some contacts, email me at: califdann@aol.com When I get the chance, I will make a field report.
