Just want to give a little information on my visit to Phnom Penh. I have been here three days now and wish I had budgeted more time for the cambodian visit. I liked the laid back atmosphere. Here are a few recommendations.
California 2 Hotel:
Run by a guy name Jim from CA. He is friendly and helpful. I think the room was great, right on the river front in the heart of PP. Had a great view, and room had frig, AC, sat TV, hot water. Small room but comfortable for $20/night and breakfast included.
Breakfast:
I tried other places for breakfast but found Hotel Cal 2 to be the best.
Moto Taxi:
Jet Boy (email: jetuser004@yahoo.com) has motorcycle and speaks good english. He works in front of the California 2 Hotel. GOOD ENGLISH and will be honest with you.
Car taxi:
Mr. Sam (email: Mrsam05@yahoo.com) speaks the best english of all and is very helpful too. To and from airport ($7.00 each way) he is the best. Also, side tours to killing fields and other places if you are concerned about the motocycle drivers. Give him your business, he just graduated from moto driver to car just one month ago and has payments to make on his toyota camry. He comes highly recommended from me and others. He also works in front of Cal 2 hotel.
Best trip:
Got moto driver to take me on the ferry across the Mekong river and then drove and the damnest dirty and roughest roads ever been on for about 20kms. Met many GREAT country people, and got invited in for lunch at a very very nice familys gathering. Great day, so get out of PP and mix with locals. well worth it.
Bars:
I know this is a P4P site but I am not a big bar person. But here is the little that I found. Went to sharkys for pool table and it was just full of women. Some 5 and some 8s. Then took moto taxi to Martinis. It was dead, maybe one women I saw. I expected better for the 3km drive to it. Sorry this is all I checked out.
PS: will be in Pattaya Jan 1 - 7th, and will get more active at the some of go go bars on walking street, that I think are the best. Hope they haven't changed as much as the go go bars at NEP.
Regret:
Spent 5 days in Bangkok and wish I had spent 0 days there and came to Cambodia for several days more. It can be boring for some but was good for me. I thought the people were so damn friendly.

Thanks for sharing that with us friend. I have had to change my plans for my first trip to South East Asia and instead of travelling overland through Thailand and Malaysia into Singapore I decided to spend my time in and around Bangkok before flying to Singapore. I think I may rethink again now and spend some time in Pnom Penh. Can you tell me anything about the Killing Fields please?

My one regret is that with 3 days here, I did not make it to the killing fields and memorial. I think it is worth going to from what I hear. I am told it is about half hour drive from city center. Don't know what would be the cost by motorcycle but probably not more than a few dollars.

I have just returned from Thailand having made a side trip to Cambodia for the first time and which surpassed all my expectations. If you want to try something a little bit different and more adventurous, give it a try, I am sure, like me, you won't be disappointed!

You go to Toul Sleng torture prison too. Almost worse. Motorcycle not much more than your normal daily rate for all day.
