I'm taking off to LOS from Chi-town on DEC. 21 and I'm also planning to goto PP for 3 days or more if my budget keeps on. I've been to BKK several times and I'm pretty confident with the place now; however, I have never been to PP. I heard PP is like a WILD WEST. Is it dangerous for 1st timers? Anyways, I just had couple of questions... 1. Plane ticket - I heard some travel agencies offer roundtrip tickets from BKK - PP for about $165. Is this true? Can someone give me telephone numbers or addresses of such agencies? 2. Hotels - I want a clean hotel with a good safe. I'm thinking that a price range between $30-40 would be great. 3. Food - I want a restaurant that could offer tasty, clean, and cheap food. 4. Marijuana - I read from different places that Cambodia has a lot of WEED. And I heard that it's illegal, but rarely prosecuted. Anyways, how much would it be for a good amount (1 lb) or so? How is the quality compared to a nice dank? And I heard that PP has places that make pizza with herbs? How is it? Worth a try? 5. Clubs - Can I get some names of clubs and discos that are similar to HELP in Rio or Adelita in Tijuana. Thanks. 6. Drivers - Any recommendations for drivers that know the place well. Playing it safe, but crazy! 7. Must see places!!! Where are they? 8. K-11 - In a recent newspaper article like a week ago, I read that the place is permanently closed. But, I read from many forums that K-11 has been closed numerous times, but still running. Is this true? Is there any recent activities there anyone want to talk about? 9. MP's - Any recommendations? I have a lot questions because PP seems like a chaotic place. I really appreciate you guys helping me out. Thanks.

BKKonelov A travel agent should be able to supply an airfare. or the Internet Most questions can be answered at the following site http://www.canbypublications.com/ or a search of Cambodia reports here and SE Asia board Hotels restaurants and things to do no problems You have to be careful anywhere you travel even around your suburbs! Plenty of great bars and clubs etc. Not interested in smoking anything and IMHO K11 is a hole. and now about closed When are you due in Phnom Penh? I'm there from 28 DEC regards Papadoc

You can book a flight directly with Bangkok Air for around 10,000Baht I believe. http://www.bangkokair.com They have like 3 or 4 flights a day, go to check-in a bit early and ask for an exit row! Walkabout hotel is a great place for newbies. >$20 a night, girl-friendly and the bar is full of girls all night long, literally...No safe, but its a great hotel for the price, IMHO. I remember seeing bags of dope at the theives market out by the airport (by the gun-range)...big bags, maybe 3-4 ounces selling for about $5. It looked like nasty schwag though, nothing over here would compare to a nice cultivated strain...But its damn cheap. The same stall selling the dope also had hand-grenades at $5 a pop! (no this wasn't during the vietnam war or anything, about 1 year ago) Places to go...just read some of the reports here. Pick up a Bayon magazine, it will have adds for a lot of the good clubs. A must do...2 girl BBBJ on the balcony at Sophies! -k

I was in Cambodia about this time last year for almost 2 weeks. I had loads of fun there and I never felt threatened once. As long as you keep your common sense and don't act like an a-hole you'll ok 1. Plan tickets prices are in constant flux. The best is to call up several travel agents and compare prices. I remembered I paid some 9,000+ baht for BKK->SR and then PP->BKK. 2. I used to stay at a place called Pacific Hotel which was renovated not too long ago before I went. Its ok and location is quite central. I think there is another one about 2-3 blocks away called New York Hotel which I think has a slightly bigger room and more facilities but only a few bucks more. You can try the following link and dozens of other hotel booking sites on the net to start http://www.myanmartourex.com/cambodiahotels.html 3. Hard to say as it all depends on your own personal taste bud. But in general I found the food is cheap and not too bad at all. As you can imagine there are lots of Vietnamese and French/western food places. My suggestion is to pick up a city guide at the hotel lobby and that will give you a lot of useful info. 4. Sorry I have no info on that as I don't smoke. But I've heard there is this place by the river called Happy Herb Pizza which offers marijuana on a pizza! 5. The joints in PP is in constant flux so its hard to say what's the hottest spot in town now. I used to go to Manhattan disco but its been closed down since. I think the Casa disco still around but prices aren't too cheap in there. Other than that there are the old stand-bys like Sharkey, Martini, Sophies and etc. My suggestion is to get a good and reliable driver that can show you around. 6. I used this guy with a motocycle while I was there. I think he is quite honest and reliable. His name is Rithsan. I don't have his phone number but his email is rithsan2000@yahoo.com. You can give him a try. 7. There are some tourist attractions within PP that worth visiting. Again read the city guide or talk to staffs at the hotel for details. 8. K-11. That's a pretty seedy place for all I can say. I've only went there once to take a look and see what's the deal with that place that's causing so much discussions on the net. 9. Again, talk to the drivers and he can bring you to them. Hope these can help

Hi BKKoneluv, 1) Planetickets from touragents around Sukumvit are in the 10.000 Baht range. In Kaosan road tickets cost 5 or 6.000 Baht. Difference? Expensive thai airline or cheap Cambodian airline. 2) Yep, they have to be great. For $10 you already have a reasonable room, but nothing special. I like the Ankor International Hotel in 148th street. ($5 - $20 rooms, so not great, but addequad for me) 3) Along the river all restaurants cater to tourists, so good food is there. But be careful, I got the shits from a noodlesoup in Martini's. 4) See Pete's post. I'm not a user. 5) Don't know these places, but search this forum or http://www.km11.com for places you like to visit. 6) My advice is f*** drivers. Every one knows what is where. PP is a very small town compaired to most towns you know. Do 5) and tell a driver you want to visit X or Y. If you let your driver bring you somewhere you pay double for what ever you can get there. So that means that 60% of your budget is going to this f***er that drives you for maybe 30 minutes per day across town. No wonder they are honest, one sucker like you and they are settled for life. A drive across town should cost about $0.50 so you need atleast 10 times to move around town for a personal driver to be economic. But the f***ing behind your back will never make him economic for you. So playing it safe means setting 1 foot on the pavement. You don't look for drivers, they are already looking for you. Give him 50 cents and a destination and send him on his way when you are there. If you are comfortable with motorbikes rent one yourself, but ask where the police are shaking down tourists. Because they are the real criminals out there on the streets. But they only give $20 fines so they are nice criminals Beyond drivers and police I never met a criminal so my view on things is that it is a safer place then the stories you have heard. I used a driver on my first visit and mysteriously I always payed premium prices. And he knew (and drove me there) all the places where the girls were. In Siem Reap I also had a driver and he was realy honest. He never took me to places that had girls or sold me anything. So that is what you look for when you want a honest driver. Only problem is that you want girls, so you need a dishonest driver. 7) Do 5) again. Palaces and temples are the obvious ones. Get a map of the town and you don't need a tourguide. From my hotel the palace, national museum, the river and central market are all within 20 minutes walking distance. 8) Pay a driver $1 and he will bring you there. But get some info on that day, before you go. The situation changes every minute. And closed means it is open, but you have to enter thru the backdoor. The police raid the place from time to time, so maybe you will be lucky and you get your 15 minutes of fame with your pic in the papers. 9) Again do 5) PP is not chaotic or a warzone. But it is a dirty and rundown town. If you are a luxury addict then don't even think about visiting this country. But if you have a bit of a backpacker in you then you can go. The only rampant crime is the motodrivers, but they only scam you, so don't worry about being killed. But what is sure to kill you is the dirt, the water and the food. If you are not very careful, that is. I have been there twice and I got sick twice (the only 2 sickdays I took from work in 10 years was after returning from cambodia). Thailand is as clean as Switserland or Singapore compaired to Cambodia. If you plan to travel about on motobikes a lot and plan to go outside the city, then bring some protective gear like gogles, scarf and hat. Because your eyes, nose and mouth will be full of dust. Oh and 10) Yes, we do want to read a full fieldreport from your visit.

I'm not going to address all your questions as I don't have anything to add to some of the previous responses. But here's my 2000 riel 1) I bought my ticket form Thailand travel and tours on soi 4 across the street from raja hotel parking lot. There's a few travel agencies there so I'm sure they're all about the same price. You should be able to find a roundtrip ticket to PP on President airlines for about $175. I myself went to Siem Reap and then flew to PP and back to BKK for 10,000 baht on Bangkok Air. 2) Hawaii hotel has big rooms for $33 a night and close to most bars As for danger I felt that PP is safe as long as you're smart. For example I was at Sharky's in September and 2 gunshots were fired outside. Me and the only other appearently smart guy in the bar stayed where we were. Everyone else made a bee line for the balcony to satisfy their curiosity. When I left later, my moto driver told me that someone had their cell phone snatched and the thief fired two shots in the air as he sped off. Still nobody running to the balcony knew that and they were in a good place to be shot if there were misplaced return fire. I'm not trying to scare anyone away from PP but make those cell phones calls indoors and stick to the same moto driver your hotel recommends and you'll be ok.
