Just a note, re all the news of closed borders etc, this only applies to Thais, was at Aranyaprahthet/Poipet yesterday, and although dead, the border still open, took us 15 mins to walk over to Cambodia, pay the 1000bt visa fee, 100bt to have it stamped, and then return to Thailand, - along with the new 30 day tourist stamp if required - only a 3 hour drive from Bangkok - of course from Piopet you can go on to Angkor Wat, not all that far, but roads v. rugged, probably 5-6 hours in a mini van.

Much safer now ... but I sort of like to watch my back in cambodia, certainly they by and large are more desperate, and not as friendly as Thais - I wouldnt wander too far from the Hotel at night, Poipet itself is just a shanty town/slum ... apart from the casinos, but you can get mini-bus from there to siem-reap / ankgor wat.

Been to Cambodia in Nov 2002 & again in Feb 2003. Recommend that you get a guide. Have found that the guide will take you where you want to go, arrange for whatever you want. Well, I've been to Angkor (by plane) and found the people in Cambodia at least as friendly as Thai people and in my opinion they are more sincere.
With Thai people, most of the time i do get the feeling that they are only friendly to you as long as they think that they can benefit from you.
But again, i' ve only been to Siem Reap and not to other parts of Cambodia.

Interesting BC, I guess you have been all over Thailand, I think that travelling thru Issarn for example, as i often am, I can call into any little desoate village down some dirt road, and immediately the food/grog is brought out, and always happy to assist, - Sure they may be money hungry in Sukhumvit/patpong, but we are talking Thais in general - whereas in most of Cambodia, especially Phnom Phen, and also Poi Pet, I dont feel safe, and the general feeling seems one of mis-trust, mind you, allowing they have been at war for about 40 years almost non stop, guess that hardly surprising - IMHO.
