I have seen water get super-heated in a microwave though, and then virtually BLOW up in the face of a not-so-briliiant Thai guy. Funny thing is, he was supposed to be our "Safety Officer". Lucky he didn't lose an eye.

I've seen it happen more than once & Snopes says TRUE !
I don't heat plain water in the microwave, always put something in it first, even if it's just a wooden stir stick.

Probably the stupidest thing I have ever read - meaning, the commentary by the person originating the (as usual) chain mail about the "dangers" of microwaving water only displays their own lack of education and understanding of reality.
I have known for years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, It's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it.
Right, and so this somehow corrupts the DNA in.... WATER? Really, dumbass!
What about the nurse in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidently killed them when the blood went in dead.
a) Hemolysis, caused by the blood being overheated, or the blood cells being made to burst by the microwaving action.
b) Blood starts out as "alive", unlike water, which is inert.
Oh, and finally, there never was any science fair project.
Won't stop dumb people from believing this, though, and I have no doubt that it's the same mothers who refuse vaccinations, are against fluoridation, and now are against microwaves.

An inert liquid does not undergo chemical reactions.
inert is the opposite of volatile, & I have witnessed super-heated water have a volatile reaction to an object being inserted, which means to me that's it's no longer inert while super-heated.

Ok, guys, physics 101 here as there is really nothing mysterious going on. And please cut the DNA nonsense.
Superheating water (in the sense of bringing the water above 100 C - but not much more - while still liquid) is possible in a microwave under specific conditions leading to the absence of so called nucleation sites (microscopic places where the boiling will start). What might happen then when you put an object in such microwave heated water is that you allow the water to go to steam suddenly (the object provides the so-called nucleation sites). This is just vaporization with a delay, no chemical reaction is involved here. Putting an object in the water before heating in the microwave provides nucleation sites from the start and the water will then boil as usual when it reaches 100 C.
Now, there might be a confusion with what happens in a pressure cooker. Water in there is heavily pressurized and some of it remains liquid despite temperatures above 200 C. This is superheated water. In those conditions, super heated water is a much stronger solvent than at normal temperatures, many reactions take place that don't normally, hence for example the very fast cooking which takes place in a pressure cooker. Here chemistry is involved.
