Gerard Depardieu 'pleased' to become Russian citizen

Actor Gerard Depardieu has hailed Russia's decision to grant him citizenship, following a tax row with the government in his native France.

In an open letter, he said he loved Russia, calling it "a great democracy".

Mr Depardieu had recently announced he would give up his French passport after the government criticised his decision to move abroad to avoid higher taxes.

Moscow earlier said President Vladimir Putin had personally signed the decree granting the actor Russian citizenship.

In December, Mr Putin had said he would be happy to welcome the actor in his new country. "If he'd like to have a Russian passport, consider it settled," Mr Putin said.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault had called Mr Depardieu's decision to leave the country "shabby".

In the letter, broadcast on Thursday on Russian TV station Pervyi Kanal, Mr Depardieu said: "I filed a passport application and I am pleased that it was accepted.

"I love your country, Russia - its people, its history, its writers. I love your culture, your intelligence."

The idea of some kind of unseen loyalty to a country is the biggest bullshit that their is. If a country does not work how you want f*** them. The Thai are a good example of how people are brainwashed and herded.

Personally I switched english for dutch 30 years ago as I like cannabis and hookers actuallly these are my hobbys.

If things change here not to my liking then easy im gone. How people stay in some countries where mongering and weed is illegal is beyond me, if the country does not give me what I want I'm gone good riddance.

Politicians are the biggest assholes around good for mr Depardieu. In my birth country nothing much has changed so I have no regrets and could not give a f*** patriotism shove it.

MF, dont tell me you are a top-income-tax payer...?
The 75%-tax payers only pay that on income *above* the outrageous top-income-tax limit...

Major problem of todays societies (especially Western) is the unbalanced relation of private wealth and public poverty... Not at least because the public poverty leads to additional costs and hidden taxes for the working and middle class...
Yeah: Kill the rich... I mean it... Their hands are bloody...

But why did G.D. exchange the brotherly kiss with Zar Putin...?

One way to look at it...

And then there are the US citizens...

Some people are loyal only to their family
Some people are loyal only to their peer group/community/province
Some people are loyal only to their country
Some people are loyal only to their cultural hemisphere (often called cosmopolitans)
Some people are loyal only to earth and mankind...
Some people are loyal only to themselves

It's all good... except the last...

Hell No, I m not a top income person...but yet I m taxed from all sides be it on my business or private life and see NOTHING coming back.

At the same time I know of various parasites who never work and spend their whole life claiming various benefits from the state, so I work and pay all the time, and THEY do nothing and get my money....how fair is that?

I would be quite reluctant to draw any political or fiscal lesson from the antics of this fading movie star.

After all, the last time Depardieu was in the news internationally was for urinating publicly aboard a plane

Mr Depardieu's ex-patriation is but a drop in the bucket about what is happening in the world today.

As more State entities overspend and raise taxes to finance their irresponsibility, people all over the world are fleeing. 1000-3000 every month leave Italy as the Feds surprise yacht owners with audits. Californians are flocking to Nevada, Texas and Florida to avoid State tax. Many have already left the US and continue to do so.

This is not an isolated event.
And it will not stop as long as Governments bent on redistribution are elected by naive and uninformed populaces anxious for handouts in preference to working for a living.
