Vietnam When the French set up camp at Dien Bien Phu in November 1953, they brought with them 49,000 bottles of wine and one woman. Troop strength rose to about 15,000. The woman and about 4,000 survived the Vietnamese siege and imprisonment. There is no record of what happened to the wine.

ot only wine, but also pastis, cognac, rhum, etc... Knowing first hand the drinking habits of many Vietnamese people, I'm sure any remaining bottle after the fall of the camp was put to good use... As for the woman, you are probably referring to Genevieve de Galard, who received a Medal of Freedom from Gen. Eisenhower for her role at the camp. But she was not the only woman there. The Foreign Legion flew in fully staffed mobile military brothels (BMC) into Dien Bien Phu. They supposedly refused to be evacuated when the battle really started and added the function of nurse to there regular duties. Most if not all the women working in the BMC are as unaccounted for as the bottles.

FIB, yes, isn't it interesting how Genevieve is always being hailed as the "only woman" who was there and who acted as a nurse. Never mind that they had several thousand wounded towards the end who needed nursing.... somehow Genevieve did it all. And yes, the BMC girls, as so often, are the real invisible saints of the story. But can you just picture the scene at the white house, with President Eisenhower timidly handing out Medals of Freedom to each of them...

Apparently there were two BMC brothels flown in, with 18 Algerian and Vietnamese girls. After the siege, the Vietnamese girls were purportedly sent to "re-education camps", while it is not clear what happened to the Algerian women. Did the Algerian soldiers who fought along side the French prefer their own kind, is that why the Algerian women were brought in as well? Or did the Algerians and French mix it up with all the women? And I have to wonder at what kind of cross-cultural bonding happened between the two groups of women suffering the same plight in that distant valley of death.

Quim, Regarding your initial post, I heard that the term "Farang" is derived from the French occupation of Vietnam?????? The French were amoung the first "white" people that many Vietnamese had seen and pronounced it in a way that was morfed into "Farang" I dont know if that is true, but a little birdie told me that atl

I always was intrigued by the story, not sure of the validity, that when Sherman got to Savannah, Georgia (BTW, an incredibly beautiful town) after lighting up almost all of my home state during the American Civil war, he was graciously met by the Mayor of Savannah. Who welcomed Sherman and his lieutenants into his home asking them "What is your drink of choice?" and it is certainly no secret that Sherman was a major booze hound And to boot, as the story goes, the Mayor's wife was an excellent cook!!! Well, as the story goes, he proceeded to charm the pants off Sherman with his wit and likability. Thus, sparing the city from the inevitable fate of being burned to the ground, like the rest of of the Georgia, and instead Sherman presented the City to President Lincoln as a Christmas gift. Again, I am not sure if that is true or not. However, if it is then that Mayor seems like my type of guy This part is true: SAVANNAH GEORGIA, December 22, 1884. To His Excellency President Lincoln, Washington, D. C.: I beg to present you as a Christmas-gift the city of Savannah, with one hundred and fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, also about twenty five thousand bales of cotton. W. T. SHERMAN, Major-General. ________________________________________ They say that when you go to Charleston, SC (Also a gorgeous town and very comperable to Savannah) the first question natives ask is "What Family are you from?" and when you go to Savannah, GA the first question the natives ask is "What is your drink of choice?" That is thought to have derived from the Mayor's encounter with Sherman If true, I would love have that mayor on my sales staff atl *edit in* I also have read the charming mayor had fled town, so take this story with a grain of salt, but I like the tale anyway

WWII At the end of the war, as Berlin was crumbling before the onslaught of the American bombardment, the Soviet troops crept in like darkness and savagely raped an estimated 2 million German women, many of them repeatedly, many of them teenagers, spawning some 200,000 children. Today those children are turning 64 as they haunt the bars of lower Sukhumvit.... Okay, so the last bit was a joke. The first bit was not.

Vietnam War - Ho Chi Minh Trail The U.S. Military and the CIA, becoming increasing frustrated at their inability to shut down the flow southward along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, despite bombing the hell out of it with B52s, began casting about for new ideas. One particularly brilliant plan the CIA purportedly came up with in 1967, having learned that the north vietnamese were fond of Budweiser beer, was to drop cartons of the stuff over the infiltration areas in southern Laos, to "slow them down". The plan apparently died on the drawing board when they couldn't figure out where to get enough beer.

The History Channel Overheard on Miami Beach earlier today: Two bikini'd white chicks are gabbing, and the blond says to the other: "When you called me last night, I was like, totally brain dead, I mean, I was like, lying there watching... the History Channel..." at which point they both laughed.

Actually, a brilliant idea, and one that would have worked wonders -- the beer wouldn't have been the problem, as long as they would have also sent in chasers -- whiskey, scotch, voBKa, etc... If they had kept the supply flowing, the Veitnamese would have been a mess.
