Probably just a cover the real reason he came to LOS.
There is jewelry company in the US that advertises frequently on TV and radio and the owner often boasts that he comes to Bangkok 4 times a year to personally select the finest rubies and sapphires for his jewelry. "Tom Shane travels to Bangkok and hand-selects each and every stone for consistent color and exceptional sparkle." I would bet every dollar I have that he selects more than just rubies and sapphires on his visits.

I got to know him a little in the early 90s, as he was a friend of a friend and liked my bar. He came in 4 or 5 times annd would hang for hours and hours. He'd stopped drinking and would pound NA beer to the point he could almost get a buzz outta 'em. Great stories of excess that would have me pissing my pants in laughter. He was nice enough to give me about a kilo of a Chinese caviar because I had liked it when he brought it in one night. Never saw him again.
